Lady Pirates suffocate cold-shooting UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – With Maryland Eastern Shore largely unable to hit anything offensively Monday evening, the Hampton University women’s basketball team cruised to a 90-62 win at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The Lady Pirates (23-4, 14-0 MEAC), on top of recording their 13th straight win, finished their regular-season road slate with a 10-3 mark (including 8-0 in conference road games).

Hampton has won its last 28 straight MEAC road games.

Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led three Lady Pirates in double figures with 26 points – 18 of which came in the first half – while senior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 21 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.

Junior guard Kenia Cole added 18 points.

 Hampton has now scored 90 or more points five times this season.

The Lady Pirates shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the floor and hit nine of their 26 3-pointers (34.6 percent). Hampton turned UMES over 17 times, resulting in 13 points.

UMES (7-18, 3-10 MEAC) shot just 21.6 percent (16-for-74) from the floor, but out-rebounded Hampton 61-47.

Jessica Long led UMES with 19 points.

The Lady Pirates return home on Saturday to take on Norfolk State at 4 p.m.

DSU Fails to Find its Groove, Falls 65-54 to Morgan State

DOVER, Del. –
Monday evening, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (7-19, 2-12 MEAC) fell 65-54 to the Morgan State Bears (4-22, 4-11 MEAC) at home.

For Morgan State, four players scored in double figures, led by the MEAC’s second leading scorer Tracey Carrington (21.1 ppg) pouring in 20 points (5-of-12) and a team-high four assists. Guard Ivy Harrington, meanwhile, scored 18 points (8-of-18) off the bench, whereas starter Simone Sampson dropped 10 points (5-of-7) and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

In the case of Delaware State, guard Raven Bankston tallied a team-high 20 points (8-of-19), while forward Tylinn Carter had 15 points (7-of-15) and a team-high nine rebounds.

Logan Powell Scores 25 Points to Lift NSU Past Howard, 79-74

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Logan Powell had a season-high 25 points to lead Norfolk State to a 79-74 victory over Howard on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.

The win snapped NSU’s three game losing streak. NSU improved to 7-6 in the conference and 11-13 overall, while the Lady Bison fell to 6-7 in league play and 10-16 on the season.

The Lady Bison came within four points, 67-63, after Shavonne Duckett drained a 3-pointer at the 2:25 mark, but NSU clinched the win scoring 10 of its last 12 points at the free throw line to seal the win. For the game, NSU shot 87.1 percent (27-of-31) from the line.

Two other Spartans reached double figures, including junior Rae Corbo, who tallied 16 points. Rachel Gordon added 12 points and 17 rebounds to post her 14th double-double of the season. She tallied 12 of her 17 boards in the first half of the game. She now has 1,015 rebounds for her career and now sits in first place all-time at NSU for career rebounding.

For the game, the Spartans shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (4-of-7) shooting from behind the arc.

NSU will play its final road game of the regular season on Saturday against Hampton. Game time is at 4 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Hampton, Va.
