Spartans Open MEAC Play with 7-0 Win Over N.C. Central

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State men’s tennis team opened MEAC play with a 7-0 win against North Carolina Central on Sunday afternoon at Centre Court Racquet Club.

The Spartans (3-3, 1-0) opened play with the doubles competition. Peter Ramstromer-Pello and Dzmitry Zyhmantovich defeated Daniil Gerasimov and Stephen Charles-Donatien, 8-0. At the No. 3 spot, Samuel Lemberger and Daniel Grauel claimed an 8-3 victory over Thomas Persico and Fabrice George.

Zyhmantovich led off in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Gerasimov. Robin Riethmueller posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Charles-Donatien. In the No. 3 spot, Igor Braga topped Tamina Kienka, 6-1, 6-0. Ramstromer-Pello overtook William East in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Lemberger competed at the No. 4 position and posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over George. Grauel closed things out with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Persico.

The Spartans return to the court to take on South Carolina State on March 1. The match begins at 11 a.m. at the Bulldog Tennis Courts in Orangeburg, S.C.

NSU Resumes MEAC Play with 4-3 Loss to N.C. Central

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.  – The Norfolk State women’s tennis team resumed MEAC play on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to N.C. Central at the Centre Court Racquet Club.

The Spartans are now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. N.C. Central is now 1-6 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC.

NSU’s only win in doubles competition came from Marie Habiyaremye and Yvonne Kamgne. They defeated Lynsey Cover and Tamara Jeremic, 8-6, at the No. 3 position. At the No. 2 slot, Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda Lhorca suffered an 8-6 loss to Rebecca Wood and Ekaterina Nekrasova. Krystal Scott and Liza Gordeeva closed things out with an 8-6 loss to Mia Ramic and Aissa Muamba.

Lhorca and Scott picked up victories for the Spartans in singles play. Lhorca upended Ramic, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Scott competed at the No. 5 spot and defeated Cover, 6-3, 6-3. Gordeeva suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Wood at the No. 1 slot. Kamegne fell to Muamba 6-1, 6-2. Macchiavello had set point at 5-2 in the first set and 5-4 in the second set against Nekrasova, but could not come out with the win. She lost 7-5, 7-6(12-10).

The Spartans return to action on March 1 against S.C. State. The match starts at 11 a.m. at the Bulldog Courts in Orangeburg, S.C.

Lady Hawks swept by Towson

SALISBURY, Md. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) junior volleyball player Petra
Jerabkova joined the women's tennis team as a late add-on to fill a void on their roster. Unfortunately, her efforts were not enough as the team suffered a sweep at the hands of the Towson Tigers in their season debut. Jerabkova, playing in the 4th position was defeated by Towson's Belen Lizana in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0.
 
Sophomore Reine Fowajuh was also defeated, 6-0 and 6-0, and junior Jasmine Jennings and freshman Selena Jones were defeated in straight sets by the same scores. The double teams of Fowajuh/Jennings and Jones/Jerabkova each fell as well by scores of 8-0.
 
UMES will open the season at 0-1, while Towson improves to 4-1 on the season.
 
The Lady Hawks will travel to Dover on Friday to square off against Delaware State University. Match time is set for 1:00p.m. The team's first home match will be against Stevenson University on March 5th.
