Bennett reaches career milestone in win at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team locked down on defense late Saturday evening in Burr Gymnasium, defeating rival Howard 59-52.

The Lady Pirates (22-4, 13-0 MEAC) won their 12th straight game.

Senior forward Alyssa Bennett led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 18 points, becoming the 25th player in program to reach the 1,000-point mark. Junior guard Kenia Cole added 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton and freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas each added 12 points. Hamilton also had a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Lady Pirates shot a season-best 53.7 percent (22-for-41) from the floor and hit three of seven 3-pointers (42.9 percent). Howard out-rebounded the Lady Pirates 26-25, but Hampton held a 26-22 edge in points in the paint.

Howard (10-15, 6-6 MEAC) shot 39.1 percent (18-for-46) from the floor.

Te’Shya Heslip led the Lady Bison with 11 points.

The Lady Pirates will have their 2013-14 road finale on Monday, taking on Maryland Eastern  Shore in Princess Anne, Md. at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Hawks comeback falls short to Delaware State

DOVER, Del. - After back-to-back victories, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team came up short as they fell to the Lady Hornets of Delaware State University (DSU), 79-68, inside Memorial Hall Gymnasium.

With the setback, the Lady Hawks dropped to 7-17 overall (3-9 MEAC) while DSU improved to 7-18 (2-11 MEAC) on the season.

Ashleigh Claybrooks controlled the paint as she recorded her seventh career double-double, 14 points and 15 boards, while Taryana Kelly added 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Freshman guard Mariah McCoy recorded 11 points and five boards while Chalyse Taylor

and Jessica Long each added nine points in a losing effort.

For DSU, they shot over 53-percent (26-of-49) from the floor, including nearly 67-percent (8-of-12) from beyond the arc. Raven Bankston scored a new career-high 36 points, the most by any individual opponent this season. N'Kayah Kersey netted 13 points whereas Jade Washington registered 11 points in the victory.

Up next, the Lady Hawks return to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center on Monday, Feb. 24th where they will face the top team in the conference, Hampton University. Game-time is booked for 5:30 p.m.

Coppin State Upends NSU, 63-51

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior Rachel Gordon was the only Spartan to score in double figures as Norfolk State dropped its third straight game of the season in a 63-51 loss to Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex.

NSU fell to 6-6 in the conference and 10-13 overall, while the Lady Eagles improved to 13-13 on the season and 10-4 in the league.

Gordon led the Spartans with 13 points. She also tallied seven rebounds. She now has 998 boards for her career and needs only three more to move into first place all-time for career rebounding at NSU.

For the game, the Spartans shot 25.4 percent (15-of-59) from the floor and they failed to make a  3-pointer (0-of-9). Freshmen Logan Powell and Koryn Lawrence finished the game with nine and five points each, respectively. Powell also had seven rebounds. Sisters Ebony Brown and freshman Amber Brown tallied five points each. Amber Brown also had a season-high of nine rebounds. Junior Rae Corbo and freshman Dominique Harper each added four points.

Coppin State shot 28.6 percent (18-of-63) overall, including 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from three. The Lady Eagles were 26-of-38 from the free throw line. Kyra Coleman led all scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Janelle Lane and Ashle Craig each added 12 points.

NSU will play its final road game of the regular season on Monday against Howard. Game time is at 5:30 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.

North Carolina Central falls to Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team suffered its largest Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss of the season as the Lady Eagles (9-17, 4-9 MEAC) fell to the rival North Carolina A&T Aggies (21-4, 11-2 MEAC) 79-51 on Saturday, Feb. 22 in Greensboro.

Redshirt senior Jessica Freeman led NCCU offensively scoring a game-high 17 points on 6-for-22 shooting from the field, 1-for-7 from behind the arc and 4-for-7 from the free throw line, while also adding three boards, three assists and three Lady Eagle steals.

Junior Racquel Davis led NCCU on the glass collecting a game-high 12 rebounds and scoring an additional eight points for the Lady Eagles while junior Khyra Conerly and rookie Alexus Hynes added 11 and seven points respectively.

The Aggies finished with four double-figure scoring performances led by Debbie Smiths 18 points and ten rebounds.

As a team, NCCU shot 18-for-50 from the field (36.0%), 2-for-9 from behind the arch (22.2%) and 13-for-23 from the free throw line (56.5%) while pulling down 36 boards, dishing eight assists and collecting five steals.

NCCU returns home for "Senior Day" on Saturday, March 1 as the Lady Eagles take on the Savannah State Tigers in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium at 2 p.m.

Bethune-Cookman tops Florida A&M, 76-62, on Senior Day

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Chastity Rene Taylor's 20 points led five B-CU players in double figures as the Lady Wildcats downed Florida A&M 76-62 Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Wildcats (10-16 overall, 7-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) gave Head Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis her first victory in the Ocean Center.

Kayla Crawford had a career-high 15 rebounds as B-CU posted a season-high 53 boards as a team.

Taylor Houston scored 14 with nine rebounds, Kailyn Williams double-doubled with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Kendra Cooper and Jasmine Evans added 12 each. Evans also hit the glass hard, registering eight rebounds.

Jasmine Grice had a game-high 27 for Florida A&M, now 14-13 and 8-6 in MEAC play.

It was the final home game for B-CU, which has won two straight and four of its last five. After a significant drought in the lopsided series, the Lady Wildcats have now won two of the last three against the Lady Rattlers.

During the pregame, the Lady Wildcats honored four outgoing seniors making their last appearance in Daytona Beach: Kayla Crawford, Jasmine Evans, Kiara Redmon and Chastity René Taylor.

The Lady Wildcats face Morgan State next Saturday (March 1) in Baltimore, Md. The Lady Bears (3-22, 1-11 MEAC) shocked rival Coppin State with a 66-61 victory on Wednesday (Feb. 19).
