Freeman scores 20 as North Carolina Central falls to Savannah State
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team suffered a 60-53 road loss as the Lady Eagles (9-16, 4-8 MEAC) gave up 33 turnovers resulting in 28 Savannah State Lady Tiger (15-11, 8-4) points on Monday, Feb. 17 in Savannah, Ga.
Redshirt senior Jessica Freeman led all-scorers finishing the game with 20 points on 8-for-22 shooting from the field, 2-for-10 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe while also collecting three rebounds and three assists.
Three Lady Tigers finished in double-figures. Ezinne Kalu and Jasmine Kirkland finished with 15 points apiece while Kenyata Hendrix added 12.
As a team, NCCU shot 20-for-57 from the field (35.1%), 3-for-14 from the three (21.4%) and 10-for-16 from the foul line (62.5%) while out rebounding SSU 47-31, dishing seven helpers, blocking three Lady Tigers shots and earning eight steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 as they travel to Greensboro, N.C., facing the rival N.C. A&T Aggies in a rematch battle at 4 p.m.

Lady Hawks Use Long Range Shooting To Soar Over Morgan State, 91-46
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- TeAmber Burke scored a team-high 15 points to lead six University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) players – including four starters – in double figures scoring, as the Lady Hawks defeated visiting Morgan State, 91-46 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at the Hytche Athletic Center on Monday evening.
The Lady Hawks improved to 7-16 overall and 3-8 in the MEAC, while Morgan State fell to 2-22, 0-11 in the MEAC.
UMES blew the game open by way of the its long range shooting, as six different Lady Hawks connected from beyond the three-point arc. Mariah McCoy scored 13 points, while connecting on 3-of-6 from three-point range, and Taylor Thompson came off the bench to score 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 three-pointers. Shawnee Sweeney also came off the bench and contributed 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown for the Lady Hawks. Breonna Evans tallied 10 points and Taryana Kelly shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to finish with 10 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to help UMES send the Lady Bears to their 15th straight loss of the season.
The last time Morgan State and UMES met, the Lady Bears eliminated UMES in the opening round of the 2013 MEAC tournament. Prior to that, just two weeks earlier, Morgan State served up a 37-point (65-28) thumping in Baltimore (3/2), while limiting the Lady Hawks to just eight first half points.
Morgan State's Tracey Carrington, who was held to just two points at the break, finished with a game-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds to tie for game high honors. Dinah Jones added 10 points in the loss.
With 5:40 remaining in the first half, Carrington stepped to the line and drained both attempts, giving her exactly 1,000 points for her career, thus making her the 11th member to reach the 1,000-point plateau on the Lady Bear charts.
The Lady Hawks outrebounded Morgan State, 46-29 for the game and also had 21 assists to just three for the Lady Bears.
The Lady Bears return home on Wednesday, Feb. 19, when they play host to crosstown rival Coppin State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. It will be the second and final regular season meeting between the two rivals in a span of nine days. The Eagles won the first meeting at Coppin, 76-60 on Feb. 10.

Grice paces Lady Rattlers past Lady Hornets
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FAMU Lady Rattlers continued to roll through MEAC play with a 95-79 victory over the visiting Hornets of Delaware State tonight in the Al Lawson Center.
Jasmine Grice ended the day with 26 points, after struggling through the first half with just 12 points. She added to her NCAA Division I-leading steals total with five. Freshman Kenya Dixon has continued to show improvement, as she scored 16 points behind two crucial three-pointers to help keep the Hornets out of range. Tierra Prothro would be the only other Lady Rattler to score in double figures as she chipped in 13. Patrice Collie and Prothro controlled the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds each.
Raven Bankston led all scorers with 33 points on 13-for-25 shooting from the field for DSU. Deanna Harmon and Tylinn Carter added 15 points each. Bankston also led the Hornets on the boards with nine rebounds.
The Lady Rattlers will travel to Daytona Beach to take on the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman on Sat., at the Ocean Center.
