MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – Tyshawn Bell of Delaware State was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  James Daniel of Howard earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Hampton’s Du’Vaughn Maxwell was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Bell (F, 6-7, 215, Jr., Dover, Del.) set career-highs as he recorded back-to-back 21-point scoring performances in wins over Savannah State and Bethune-Cookman.  He shot 78-percent (7-of-9) from the field and perfectly from long range (2-of-2) and the charity stripe (5-of-5) in a 79-59 win over the Tigers.  He followed that performance with a double-double, hauling down 10 rebounds and dishing out four assists, in the win over the B-CU Wildcats.

Daniel (G, 5-11, 165, Fr., Hampton, Va.) averaged 29.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.5 steals in games against Norfolk State and Maryland Eastern Shore.  He scored 25 points, hitting six shots from behind the arc, in 30 minutes of play against NSU.  He equaled his career-high of 33 points, connecting on 11-of-14 from the free-throw line, with three rebounds, two assists and two steals against UMES.

Maxwell (F, 6-7, 215, Sr., Manhattan, N.Y.) grabbed 22 boards, blocked eight baskets and registered one steal in wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and Norfolk State last week.  He hauled down 14 rebounds and recorded eight blocks against UMES.  Offensively, he added 28 points and dished out five assists to help the Pirates finish 2-0 in conference play last week.

 

Other Top Performances

Hakeem Baxter (UMES) scored 22 points, four rebounds and two steals, in 35 minutes of play, against Howard.

Justin Black (MSU) shot 9-of-14 from the field to finish with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, in 40 minutes of play, in a win over Coppin State.

Ian Chiles (MSU) finished with 23 points, six rebounds, two assists and five blocked shots against Coppin State.

Brandon Goode (NSU) recorded a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds with six blocked shots in an overtime loss to Hampton.

DeAndre Haywood (DSU) tallied a total of 30 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in a pair of wins over Savannah State and Bethune-Cookman.

Jeremy Ingram (NCCU) averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 1.0 block and 1.5 steals in a pair of wins over Florida A&M and South Carolina State.

Tony Knyard (B-CU) finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and three steals in games against North Carolina and Delaware State last week.

Reggie Lewis (FAMU) scored a season-high 24 points, tying his season-high of six 3-pointers, with five rebounds, one assist and one steal in a win over Coppin State.

Troy Snyder (UMES) recorded a double-double of 34 points and 14 rebounds with five assists, one block and one steal, in a come-from-behind win over Howard.

Pendarvis Williams (NSU) averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 block and 3.0 steals in two conference games last week.
