Tennis Recap: Feb. 14

Spartans Take Down Hampton 4-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State men’s tennis team posted a 4-0 win over Hampton on Friday at the Centre Court Racquet Club.

The Spartans improved to 1-2 on the season, while Hampton fell to 2-2 overall.

In doubles play, sophomore Robin Riethmueller and junior Igor Braga teamed up to defeat Advait Kirtane and Aleksandre Davlianidze, 8-1. Senior Kent Austin and sophomore Samuel Lemberger claimed an 8-4 victory over Henry Drakeford and Joshua McQueen.

Freshman Dzmitry Zyhmantovich competed at the No. 1 singles position and posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kirtane. In the No. 2 spot, Riethmueller defeated Davlianidze, 6-1, 6-1. Closing out the singles competition was senior Peter Ramstromer-Pello. He upended Miguel Suarez, 6-2, 6-4.

The Spartans return to the court on Saturday to face Binghamton. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va.

 

 

NSU Claims 5-0 Victory Over Hampton

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.  – The Norfolk State women’s tennis team claimed its second straight win of the season with a 5-0 sweep against Hampton on Friday at the Centre Racquet Club.

Sophomore Andrea Macchiavello and junior Mafalda Lhorca led off for the Spartans in the doubles competition posting an 8-0 win over Danielle Butler and Melanie Scott. Freshman Marie Habiyaremye and junior Yvonne Kamegne also claimed an 8-0 victory over Steffy Paez and Daneya Charles. Freshman Liza and junior Krystal Scott won at the No. 3 spot because the Lady Pirates had to default because they only had five players.

In the singles competition, Gordeeva competed at the No. 1 spot. She defeated Butler, 6-0, 6-1. Macchiavello also claimed a singles victory, upending Paez, 6-0, 6-1. Kamegne competed at the No. 3 position and took down Melanie Scott, 6-0, 6-0. Habiyaremye won the No. 6 singles by default because Hampton had only five players.

The Spartans will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Feb. 19 to take on UNC-Chapel Hill. Play begins at 4 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
