North Carolina A&T Rolls Past Weary Bethune-Cookman

GREENSBORO, N.C.  - The North Carolina A&T Aggies (18-4, 8-2 MEAC) pulled away from the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (8-16, 5-7 MEAC) in the second half of Monday’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Ellis F. Corbett Sports Center.

After a tight early game, N.C. A&T wore down a fatigued B-CU team in the 66-35 win.

Chastity ReneTaylor’s output picked up in the second half, scoring eight in the period and finishing with 11. Shakeyia Colyer matched the effort with 11 points as well. Both seniors collected five rebounds each.

Redshirt freshman Kailyn Williams matched her career high with seven blocks on the night. Her performance also matches the seventh-best blocked shot game in program history. With tonight’s total, Williams total also moves to 75 on the year, tying Scherrie Jackson (1995) for the second-best blocking season in B-CU program history.

Next on the slate for the Lady Wildcats is a February 15 home date with Delaware State at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium. The game is designated as B-CU’s annual “Think Pink” game, creating greater breast cancer awareness.

Coleman paces Coppin State past rival Morgan State

BALTIMORE --- Kyra Coleman scored a career-high 31 points, marking the second consecutive 30-point performance, as Coppin State defeated rival Morgan State, 76-60, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s basketball game Monday night at the Physical Education Complex.

Coleman  also added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Coppin State raised its overall record to 12-11 and MEAC mark to 9-2 as it inched closer to securing a bye into the quarterfinals of the conference tournament next month. Morgan State fell to 2-21 and 0-10.

Senior Ashle Craig  scored all 11 of her points in the opening half as Coppin State went about its business of dismantling Morgan State with the joy of a dentist performing a root canal. Junior Bria Harris had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench, the fourth time this season, she reached double figures. Omaah Tayong had six rebounds and four blocked shots.

Tracey Carrington scored 17 points to lead Morgan State and up her career total to 999.

Coppin State begins its final road trip of the season when it takes its talents to Tallahassee to meet Florida A&M Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Lady Pirates win offensive struggle over UMES

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team grinded its way to another 20-win season on Monday evening, holding off Maryland Eastern Shore, 54-35, at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (20-4, 11-0 MEAC) have won 20 games for the fifth straight season.

Hampton, which is on a 10-game winning streak, has won 41 straight games against MEAC foes (including conference tournament games) and 17 straight home MEAC games. The Lady Pirates tied their season low for points allowed in a game.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton was the only Lady Pirate in double figures, scoring a game-high 25 points – 18 in the first half – on eight field goals, three 3-pointers, and six free throws. Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added eight points.

Redshirt-freshman guard Sade King scored seven points off the bench, and redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Tyler Hobgood blocked a season-high five shots.

The Lady Pirates shot 26.3 percent (18-for-72) from the floor, but out-rebounded UMES 60-57 and turned 21 Hawks turnovers into 17 points.

UMES (5-16, 1-8 MEAC) shot just 12.5 percent (9-for-67) from the floor, managing just four field goals in the first half and five field goals in the second half. Six of the Lady Hawks’ nine field goals came from behind the arc.

Shawnee Sweeney led UMES with 15 points.

The Lady Pirates will cross the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Saturday to take on Norfolk State in Echols Hall at 4 p.m.

Lady Eagles come up short against FAMU in season rematch

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team was unable to pull off the season sweep over the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (12-12, 6-5) as the Lady Eagles (8-15, 3-7) dropped a seven-point, 70-63 decision to FAMU inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Monday.

Redshirt junior Jessica Freeman led NCCU offensively, scoring a team-best 21 points on 8-for-25 shooting from the field, 3-for-9 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe while also pulling down four boards, dishing two assists and collecting two steals.

In addition to Freeman, junior Racquel Davis collected her tenth double-double of the season scoring 18 points and seizing 12 rebounds.

Jasmine Grice led the Lady Rattlers scoring a game-high 34 points on 14-for-24 shooting from the field, 1-for-5 from three-point land, and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The redshirt senior also collected five boards, three assists, one blocked shot and four steals during her 40 minutes of action.

As a team NCCU shot 25-for-59 from the field (42.4%), 5-for-15 from behind the arc (33.3%) and 8-for-18 from the foul line (44.4%) while pulling down 38 boards, dishing 16 assists and collecting seven steals.

The Lady Eagles hit the road for a two-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series. NCCU takes on the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 15 in Orangeburg, S.C., and the Savannah State Tigers on Monday, Feb. 17 in Savannah, Ga.

Hornets Hang Tough at Home, Physical Tigers Hold on for a 77-71 Victory

DOVER, Del. –
Monday evening, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (6-16, 1-9 MEAC) fell 77-71 at home to the Savannah State Tigers (14-10, 7-3 MEAC).

For DSU, guard/forward Deanna Harmon finished with a career-high 24 points (3-of-5), including an 18-for-19 (.947) career night from the charity stripe, whereas guard Raven Bankston tallied 22 points (8-of-20) and five rebounds.

In the case of the Tigers, they were led by guard Jasmine Kirkland’s 24 points (9-of-17) off the bench.
