Hornets open 2014 season with sweep of Aggies

RALEIGH, N.C. --- The Delaware State University women’s tennis team opened its 2014 season with two shutout wins over North Carolina A&T at the Raleigh Racket Club this weekend. The Hornets won the first match with a 6-0, and completed the sweep with a 5-0 win in match two.

In the opener, consisting of singles contests, DSU’s top five players posted straight set wins. The Hornets won the sixth match by default.

Meheq Kohkhar was a 6-0, 6-0 winner in the No. 5 match, while Kristina Aleksic claimed the No. 4 contest 6-0, 6-3.

Delaware State’s Maya Banas won the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-3. Ksenia Kozlova and Vanja Andonova claimed victories in the opener. Kozlova was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2; and Andonova posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3.

In the second match. Alexsic took the No. 3 contest 10-0. Banas (10-5) and Kohkhar (10-6) were winners at No.1 and No. 3, respectively.

Kozlova and Andonova teamed up for an 8-1 victory in the lone doubles contest of the match.

 

 

Bethune-Cookman splits matches against FAU and Nova Southeastern

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman split its women's matches Saturday, falling 6-1 to Florida Atlantic while registering a 6-3 decision over Nova Southeastern.

Mina Matsuba won both her No. 1 singles matches, and combined with Maria Sablina for a No.2 doubles victory against Nova Southeastern. Gaby Chinchilla

took a straight sets match while Elizabeth Nyenwe and Ancia Ifill won tiebreakers to help the Lady wildcats improve to 2-3.

In men's action, B-CU (0-4) dropped a 6-1 decision to Florida Atlantic. Alvaro Barrera won at No. 5 singles and Diego Garavito/Santiago Lobelo at No. 2 doubles for the Wildcats.

 

 

SSU Tennis Downs Alabama A&M On The Road

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Lady Tigers traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to face the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M and the Lady Hornets of Alabama State this past weekend. SSU beat Alabama A&M 7-0 and fell to ASU, 7-0.

Against Alabama A&M, on the doubles court, Andrea Pavlovic and Nadin Olsson beat Jessica Taylor and Orianna Rodriguez 7-6 with a 7-4 tie-breaker.  Angela Bonilla and Jennyfer Vivas beat Khyanna Price and Leslie Ipke 8-0.  SSU won the third set of doubles play by default.

The Lady Tigers were perfect in singles action. Pavlovic, playing in the first court defeated Rodriquez 6-0, and 6-3.  Bonilla faced Jessica Taylor on the second court, dropping the first set 1-6, and winning the second 6-3 with a 10-7 tie-breaker.

Olsson and Vivas closed out competitive play in the third and fourth spots defeating A&M’s Price and Ikpe in straight sets, both with scores of 6-0, and 6-0. SSU won the fifth and sixth positions by default.

The Lady Tigers were defeated by the Lady Hornets in SSU’s first game of the weekend.  In singles play Arantxia Wilngaardos defeated Pavlovic in straight sets 6-1, and 6-1.  Playing in the second position Bonilla faced Paulina Denis, falling 1-6, and 2-6. Olsson was beat by ASU's Brankica Orlovic 6-1, and 6-3.

In the fourth court, Vivas fell to Irina Cvijovic 3-6, and 3-6.  Tiffany Williams and Bria Burrows faced off against ASU's Melissa Telfer and Nathalie Lorenco both lost in straight sets, 0-6, and 0-6.

In doubles action, Pavlovic teamed up with Olsson to take on the team of Wijngaarde and Lorence, ultimately falling 4-8.  Bonilla and Vivas lost to Denis and Telfer 5-8.  ASU's Orlovic and Cvijovc combined to defeat Burrows and Williams 8-0.

The Lady Tigers are 1-2 overall this season and continue the 2014 campaign with back-to-back home matches on February 14 and 15. They face Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. on the 14th, and Mercer University at 1 p.m. the next day.
