Lady Pirates survive road test at Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team used a run midway through the second half to pull away from Coppin State and escape the Physical Education Complex with an 83-75 win on Saturday.

The Lady Pirates (17-4, 8-0 MEAC) have won seven straight games. Hampton has also won its last 38 games against MEAC foes (including conference tournament games), as well as 24 straight on the road in conference play.

Junior guard Kenia Cole led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 23 points, while freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Alyssa Bennett added 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton scored 10 points, becoming the 24th player in program history to eclipse the career 1,000-point mark.

The Lady Pirates shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the floor and made seven of their 16 3pointers (43.8 percent). Hampton also held a decisive 51-37 edge on the glass.

Coppin State (9-11, 6-2 MEAC) shot 40.3 percent (27-for-67) from the floor, while also going 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) from behind the arc. But the Lady Eagles made just 15 of their 26 free throws (57.7 percent).

Kyra Coleman led Coppin State with 25 points, while Larissa Carter added 21 points.

The Lady Pirates will take on Morgan State on Monday at 4 p.m. to close out their four-game road swing.

Lady Hornets Buzz By Morgan State, 86-66

BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan State’s Tracey Carrington recorded her first double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 25 points and a team- and season-best 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough, as Delaware State defeated Morgan State 86-66 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Carrington, who shot 9-of-20 from the floor, also tallied three assists, two steals and a block. Danielle Robinson scored a season-high 14 points and had a team-high four assists. Dinah Jones added eight points and eight rebounds, while La’Quacious Adams finished with eight points and five rebounds for the Lady Bears, who have now dropped their fifth straight contest at home. Simone Sampson totaled a game-high two blocked shots to increase her team-leading total to 15.

Delaware State (6-13, 1-6 MEAC), which was playing without its leader, Tierra Hawkins (20.7 points, 10.2 rebounds per game), who continues to sit with a shoulder injury, turned to freshman Raven Bankston. Bankston, who entered the game averaging 18.1 points, scored a career- and game-high 35 points on 13-of-23 shooting to lead the visiting Lady Hornets to a their first MEAC victory of the season.

Deanna Harmon scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Mi’Queara Lewis finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Tylinn Carter came off the bench and added 13 points, had a game-high three steals and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to help the Lady Hornets to a 47-37 rebounding advantage over Morgan State.

The Lady Bears return to action on Monday, Feb. 3, when they play host to the Lady Pirates of Hampton. Due to the men’s game which will air live at 7 p.m. on ESPNU, the women’s game will tip-off at 4 p.m. at Hill Field House. Hampton, which defeated Morgan State, 99-45 earlier this season in an ESPN3 game in Hampton (1/20), is coming off an 83-75 road victory at Coppin State on Saturday.

Lady Hawks suffer setback to North Carolina A&T
 
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After winning Wednesday's contest versus New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team suffered a setback as they fell to North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT), 73-63.
 
With the loss, the Lady Hawks fell to 4-14 overall (0-6 MEAC) while NCAT improved to 15-4 (5-2 MEAC) on the season.
 
Junior guard Jessica Long paced the Hawk attack, registering a game-high 22 points, while Ashleigh Claybrooks had 10 points and nine boards in the loss.
 
Other notable Hawk performances included Shawnee Sweeney recording 12 points, including three long balls, while Alexis Udoji added five points and nine boards in a losing effort.
 
 
For NCAT, four Lady Aggies had double-figures, led by Tracy King posting a team-high 21 points, including 4-of-6 from downtown, whereas Ariel Bursey chipped in 14 points in the victory.
 
On Monday, the Lady Hawks continue their home-stand as the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University (NCCU) comes to town. Game-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Bethune-Cookman Falls Short Against Savannah State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (6-15, 3-6 MEAC) battled back from a 14-point halftime deficit, but couldn’t quite make it over the hump in the second half against Savannah State (13-9, 6-2 MEAC), falling to the Lady Tigers 71-64 on Saturday at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Turnovers were a considerable factor in Saturday’s MEAC contest, as Savannah State converted 15 B-CU turnovers into 22 points, with 20 coming on the fast break.

Shakeyia Colyer shot 43 percent from the field for a team-high 19 points, with eight rebounds. Proving a big boost in the second half, Chastity Rene Taylor put up 16 points. Williams added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds, in addition to four blocks.

SSU’s Ezinne Kalu finished with 30 points, three assists and four steals in the contest.

The Lady Wildcats wrap up a four-game home stand on Monday with South Carolina State (5-13, 3-5 MEAC) coming to Moore Gym.  The Lady Bulldogs fell to Florida A&M in Tallahassee on Saturday, 70-64.

FAMU holds off South Carolina State for 70-64 win, Saturday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team won their second straight with a 70-64 win over South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Contest, here Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU finished the contest shooting 35.1 percent (26-of-74), whereas SCSU shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53).

The Lady Lady Rattlers (10-11, 4-4 MEAC) was led by Jasmine Grice as she scored a game high 26 points to lead all scorers.  Tierra Prothro recorded her second double-double on the season with 16 points and 14 boards, while Taneka Rubin recorded her first double-double in the contest with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Alicia Hines rounded out the cast of double-digit performers with 10. 

SCSU (5-13, 3-5 MEAC) was led by Mykala Jones with a team high 24 points as she connected -on six treys in seven attempts from behind the arc, while Cabriel Duren added 10 points on the night.  Both Cherisha Floyd and Persephone Goodwin finished with seven rebounds each to lead the Lady Bulldogs on the boards.  In addition, Goodwin recorded five blocks on the night.

FAMU will return to action on Monday, Feb. 1 as the Lady Rattlers will welcome Savannah State to the Al Lawson Center in a MEAC contest.

Lady Eagles drop five-point decision in Nation’s Capital

WASHINGTON, D.C. – While junior Racquel Davis earned her ninth double-double of the season, and three Lady Eagles (8-12, 3-4) scored in double figures, it was still not enough to hold off the Howard University Lady Bison (9-11, 5-2) as NCCU suffered a 66-61 shortcoming on Saturday in The Burr.

Davis finished with a team-best 15 points and a game-high 13 boards while fellow junior Khyra Conerly chipped in 13 points and red shirt senior Jessica Freeman added 11.

The Lady Bison were led by Cheyenne Brown’s 23 points, while Jasmine Hill and Victoria Gonzalez also added double-figure scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively.

As a team, NCCU shot 19-for-52 from the field (36.5%), 3-for-10 from behind the arc (30.0%) and 20-for-23 from the free throw line (87.0%) while pulling down 41 rebounds, dishing ten assists and collecting six steals.

The Lady Eagles look to split the weekend Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series as they travel to Princess Anne, Md., to take on the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks on Monday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
