UMES rolls to a perfect day at MEAC North Meet
MILLSBORO, Del. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s bowling team cruised through five matches against northern division teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) today at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del. The Hawks posted a perfect 5-0 mark in the traditional team game format, extending their conference record to an unblemished 15-0 mark exactly half way through the league season. They are now 31-13 on the year.
In the final home meet of the 2014-15 campaign the Hawks got started with a 1,105-634 thumping of Coppin State. They followed that up with a 982-759 win over Morgan State. Their closest match of the day was against 19th ranked Delaware State. While closer than UMES had hoped, they still soared past the Hornets 976-931. The Hawks wrapped up the day with wins over Hampton (1,005-727) and Howard (1,075-718).
The fifth ranked Hawks got stellar outings from senior All-American Mariana Alvarado who tallied 1,145 over her five games to average a solid 229 on the NCAA pattern #5. Junior newcomer Thashaina Seraus wasn’t far behind her with a 1,089 in her five games for a 217.8 clip. The two easily finished first and second in the field individually.
Seraus had the high game of the day for UMES with a 266 in the Coppin State win while Alvarado added a 262 in that same game. Alvarado piled on a 261 and a 246 in the Hampton and Howard wins while Seraus added a 215 and a 252 in the Delaware State and Howard victories.
Tatiana Munoz and Valerie Riggin knocked down 996 and 991 pins respectively for averages of 199.2 and 198.2. The pair of UMES seniors took third and fourth in the field overall. Victoria Jones was eighth overall in the field of 34, with her 922 pin fall, an average of 184.4.
Munoz tossed a 222, 201 and a 214 in the wins over Coppin State, Morgan State and Howard while Riggin added 200 plus games of 225, 202 and 205 in the Morgan State, Delaware State and Hampton matches.
This is the second of three conference meets for the teams and one day in is exactly half way through the MEAC season. UMES is a perfect 15-0 in the north while Delaware State went 4-1 on the day to improve to 11-4. Morgan State was 3-2 to improve to 9-6 while Howard went 2-3 to go to 7-8 in the conference. Coppin State went 0-5 on the day but remains in fifth with a 2-13 record in the MEAC while Hampton got their first win in the MEAC this year to go to 1-14.
Tomorrow will be five Baker matches, made up of five games with each bowler tossing two frames in each game. They will bowl on the same 44-foot pattern of the NCAA Dual Transfer Brush #5 for 2014-2015.

Newman and Sharpe pace Coppin State during Day 1 action
MILLSBORO, Del. – Jasmine Newman and Kristen Sharpe finished among the top 10 overall bowlers on the first day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division meet at Millsboro Lanes Saturday.
Newman was seventh overall with a 189.40 average through five traditional team matches. The highlight of the day for the Eagles was Newman rolling a school record 266 against Delaware State. Meanwhile, Sharpe was 10th overall with a 176 average. Her best match was a 231 against Hampton. Both athletes knocked down at least 160 pins in four of their five matches.
As team, Coppin State dropped its matches to Maryland Eastern Shore (1105-634), Delaware State (895-719), Howard (760-637), Morgan State (779-627) and Hampton (715-626).
The Eagles conclude the MEAC North meet Sunday morning beginning at 9 a.m. with five Baker matches.
