Big Second Half Propels Norfolk State over Morgan State
NORFOLK, Va. - Rae Corbo scored a game-high 25 points, one shy of her career high, and helped lead a strong second-half charge that carried Norfolk State to a 68-63 win over Morgan State in the MEAC opener for both on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.
The Spartans (2-5, 1-0 MEAC) overcame a six-point halftime deficit by shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the floor in the second half. NSU also got 11 second-half points from second-leading scorer Kayla Roberts, who was held scoreless in the opening half.
Lexus Spears had 15 points to pace the Lady Bears (2-6, 0-1 MEAC).
NSU shot a season-high 42.6 percent from the floor (23-of-54) to overcome 26 turnovers. Just nine of those came in the second half, however, when the Spartans made their move. Corbo was 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and 10-of-12 from the line to finish with a season-high point total. Her previous high was 24 at Virginia Tech. Corbo also had four rebounds and three assists.
Roberts shook off a slow start to finish with her first career double-double, 11 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. NSU outrebounded the Lady Bears 46-38, the Spartans' best performance on the boards this season. Jazamine Gray, Aivah Parham and Kieera Basey finished with eight points apiece for NSU.
Eva Myers chipped in 13 points and Farrar 10 for MSU. Ivy Harrington added eight off the bench.
The Spartans are off for the next nine days for first-semester exams before hosting Marshall at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

First Half Flurry by Virginia Too Much for Delaware State
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Delaware State women’s basketball team (1-7) faced an uphill climb Saturday afternoon, as the ACC’s Virginia Cavaliers (6-2) shot a season-best 54 percent (38-of-71), in addition to five players scoring in double figures on their way to a 100-62 rout over the Lady Hornets.
With this loss, DSU dropped its fourth in a row, while Virginia bounced back from an 86-63 loss at Illinois on Wednesday as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
For DSU, it was held to 36 percent (21-of-58) shooting, despite guard Mikah Aldridge’s career-high 17 points (5-of-10) off the bench to lead four Hornets in double figures. Aldridge also hit a career-high four 3-pointers, in what was her first game back after missing the previous three due to a head injury. Forward Nikkei Blackburn turned in her best performance of the season with 12 points (6-of-10) and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will head north to Michigan for back-to-back games, beginning Dec. 16 at Central Michigan. DSU will then face Detroit two days later at 7 p.m.

Henderson and Harris lead Coppin State in road loss
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Tanaysa Henderson and Bria Harris led Coppin State in scoring during an 83-43 loss to West Virginia Saturday afternoon.
Henderson topped the team with a career-high 13 points. She scored all of her points in the second half. Henderson was 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Harris added 10 points and eight rebounds. This is her fourth time this season and ninth career game scoring in double figures.
Amber Griffin notched eight points, pulled down six rebounds, and dished four assists.
Keena Samuels and Jordan Swails tallied four points apiece.

Lady Hawks win MEAC opener over North Carolina Central
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – For the first time since 2011, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team won their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener by defeating North Carolina Central (NCCU), 71-61, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The victory also gave UMES their first three-game winning streak since the 2010-11 season.
With the win, the Lady Hawks improved to 3-4 (1-0 MEAC) on the season while NCCU dropped to 2-5 (0-1 MEAC) overall.
Maryland Eastern Shore had the upper-hand for majority of the contest as they led for more than 34 minutes. UMES outworked the Lady Eagles on the glass, 47-35, and outhustled them in second chance points, 21-11. The Lady Hawks scored 20 points off 18 North Carolina Central turnovers.
Senior guards Jessica Long and Shawnee Sweeney led the squad, combining for 25 points. Long notched a team-high 15 points, five assists, five boards, and three steals while Sweeney added 10 points, two dimes, and two rebounds in the victory.
Other notable Hawk performances included TeAmber Burke and Mariah McCoy coming off the bench, combining for 22 points, while Kelly posted eight points and a game-high 12 boards in the win.
For the Lady Eagles, Racquel Davis had a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds. Morgan Jones recorded 13 points and three boards while Khyra Conerly added 12 points, five rebounds, and a game-high six steals in a losing effort.
This Monday, the Lady Hawks host MEAC preseason favorite North Carolina A&T to wrap up their four-game home stand. Game-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Hollis Leads Bethune-Cookman to MEAC-Opening Victory at Savannah State
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (3-5, 1-0 MEAC) opened up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate with a gutsy performance on Saturday (Dec. 6) evening, defeating Savannah State (4-2, 0-1 MEAC), 59-52 in Tiger Arena.
Meeting the Lady Tigers on the court where they dropped the Florida Gators on Thursday, Kayla Crawford and Terrenisha Hollis anchored the Lady Wildcats through a back-and-forth first half, each finishing with eight points in the opening period, as the lead changed hands five times, in addition to seven ties.
In addition to Hollis’ output, Crawford collected 14 points with five rebounds. Kailyn Williams provided a strong defensive presence in the second half after sitting nine minutes in the first due to fouls, tallying nine (9) rebounds and four (4) key blocks. Kendra Cooper hit three from long range to finish with 10 for the day.
The Lady Wildcats allowed a season-low 11 turnovers in the win of the Tigers.
The Lady Wildcats remain on the road and will be back in action on Monday (Dec. 8) at South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C. The SCSU Lady Bulldogs (4-2, 0-1 MEAC) fell to Florida A&M on Saturday at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, 55-50.

Lady Pirates top Richmond for second straight win
RICHMOND, Va. – Behind four double-digit scorers, the Hampton University women’s basketball team picked up its second straight win on Saturday evening, upending Richmond 64-53 at the Robins Center.
The win closed out a 2-1 road trip for the Lady Pirates (2-5).
Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led Hampton with 16 points and four assists, while senior guard Kenia Cole and junior guard Ryan Jordan each added 14 points.
Jordan also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Senior guard Kyani White chipped in 12 points, going 5-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-4 from 3-point range. She also had six rebounds and four assists.
The Lady Pirates shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56) from the floor and hit nine of 21 3-pointers (42.9 percent). Hampton turned the ball over just nine times and turned 19 Richmond turnovers into 24 points.
Richmond (3-4) shot 38.0 percent (19-for-50) from the floor and held a 39-32 rebounding edge.
Lauren Tolson led three Spiders in double figures with 20 points.
The Lady Pirates will return home on Monday to open MEAC play against Morgan State at 6 p.m.

King paces Florida A&M past South Carolina State
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Florida A&M's Dawn King scored a game-high 26 points on 11-15 shooting from the field to lift the visiting Lady Rattlers to a 55-50 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State Saturday at Smith-Hammond Middleton Memorial Center. The contest was the league opener for both squads.
Kourtney Williams connected for 18 points and Toni Grier 10 and a team-high six rebounds for the host Lady Bulldogs, who were unable to overcome cold shooting from the field. SC State made just 17-of-61 attempts for a dismal 27.9 percent accuracy.
The loss, the first at home for South Carolina State head coach Doug Robertson's squad, dropped SC State to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the MEAC.
Florida A&M canned 46.9 percent of its attempts from the field, making 23-of-49 tries while improving to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in the league. The Lady Rattlers also enjoyed a slight edge on the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds to 36 for the Lady Bulldogs. Khaderja Young, who finished with eight points and Jamie Foreman each had eight boards for the visitors.
SC State returns to the court on Monday to meet Bethune-Cookman in the first game of an MEAC doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

North Carolina A&T rallies to down Howard
WASHINGTON, D.C. – What began as a terrible nightmare for the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team, turned into a happy ending as it topped Howard 80-69, Saturday evening at Burr Gymnasium in the MEAC opener.
The Aggies (6-2 overall, 1-0 MEAC), who are currently 17th in the nation in scoring defense and have held their opponents to an average of 52.0 points per game, saw a different story unfold on Saturday.
The Aggies found themselves trailing the Bison (0-8, 0-1) 16-4 to start the game, but coming off a come-from-behind win, they knew exactly what to do.
Debbie Smith led all scorers and recorded a career-high 22 points as A&T recorded a season-high 80 points. She also added six rebounds and was 3-for-5 from the 3-point range. The Aggies shot 53.8 percent from beyond the arc. Adriana Nazario also tabbed a career-high with 21 points along with a team-high six assists.
Te’Shya Heslip tallied 21 points and 12 assists for the Bison. Heslip also grabbed eight rebounds. Sydni Johnson finished with 17 points.
North Carolina A&T will face Maryland Eastern Shore in a conference game on Monday, December 8 at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
