Griffin paces Coppin State in loss to Maryland

BALTIMORE - Junior guard Amber Griffin led Coppin State with 10 points in its 110-51 setback to 14th-ranked Maryland in the Physical Education Complex Sunday afternoon.

Also turning in solid efforts for the Eagles were Bria Harris (eight points along with a game-high 11 rebounds), Jordan Swails (nine points) and Janelle Lane (eight points). It was the third time this season Harris has grabbed double-digit rebounds.

Meanwhile, Swails was perfect from beyond the arc, making both of her shots. In addition to her five rebounds, Tanaysa Henderson added seven points.

Looking ahead, Coppin State has a week to prepare for its final non-conference foe of the season, Virginia Commonwealth University next Sunday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex.

SC State Women Fall at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - The South Carolina State women's basketball team outscored Clemson 41-37 in the second half, but could not overcome a 13-point first-half deficit as the Tigers posted a 66-57 win at Littlejohn Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

Kourtney Williams and Amber Howard each finished with 16 points. Howard scored 13 of her points in the second half after going 4-for-8 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from long range. Williams poured in 11 second-half points. Jasmine Coleman led SC State with seven rebounds, while Ashleigh Outler grabbed six.

The Lady Bulldogs have a week off for the holidays before hosting the College of Charleston at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28.

Lady Bears End 2014 With Loss To Tennessee Tech

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Braennan Farrar scored a game-high 20 points to lead four Lady Bears in double figures scoring, but it wasn’t enough, as Morgan State dropped a 62-56 decision to Tennessee Tech in the consolation game of the Chattanooga Christmas Classic on Sunday afternoon at The McKenzie Arena.

The loss extended Morgan State’s losing skid to a season-long eight straight and ended the Lady Bears’ three-game winning streak over Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) opponents. Morgan State, which fell to 3-5 against OVC members, also fell to 0-2 all-time against Tennessee Tech.

Tennessee Tech’s bench outscored Morgan State’s 23-3. The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 24-14 advantage in points in the paint and held a 13-4 cushion over the Lady Bears in second chance points. Both teams scored 11 points off of the other’s turnovers and had four fast break points.

The Lady Bears will be off until January 1, when they ring in the New Year with a non-conference game against rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at RAC Arena.
