Lady Pirates Fall At James Madison
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team suffered through a cold shooting day on Saturday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center, as James Madison took the 85-53 win.
The Lady Pirates fell to 3-7 on the season.
Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the Lady Pirates with 20 points – hitting three 3-pointers and going 7-for-10 from the free throw line, while also grabbing a team-high four steals. Senior guard Kyani White added 10 points and three assists.
Redshirt junior forward Tyler Hobgood grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 26.6 percent (17-for-64) from the floor and made four of their 18 3-pointers (22.2 percent). Hampton was also 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) from the free throw line.
The Lady Pirates will be in Chicago, Ill. on Monday to take on No. 25 DePaul at 8 p.m. EST.

Campbell Holds Off Bethune-Cookman
DeLAND, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman (3-10) opened Saturday’s Hatter Classic matchup with Campbell (6-5) with a fast start, but were limited offensively late in the first half. The Lady Camels clung to their advantage and were able to keep the Lady Wildcats at bay on their way to a 66-55 win.
Kailyn Williams, who was named to the Stetson Hatter Classic All-Tournament Team, came on strong in the second half, and topped the Lady Wildcats with 14 points and eight (8) rebounds. Kayla Crawford logged her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to four (4) assists. Kendra Cooper finished with 12 points and five (5) rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats have dropped five straight, but will get a fresh start in the New Year, starting back up on Jan. 3 with Western Carolina coming to Richard V. Moore Gymnasium to open a three-game home stand, which also includes Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contests with Hampton and Norfolk State.

American glides over Lady Hawks
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In a Saturday afternoon showdown, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team could not slow down the hot shooting American Eagles as they fell, 64-52, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The result snapped the Lady Hawks’ four-game home winning streak.
With the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 4-6 overall while the Eagles moved to .500 (5-5) on the season.
Despite the loss, UMES outrebounded American, 38-31, and scored 17 second chance points. Senior guard Shawnee Sweeney notched a team-high 14 points and seven boards while freshman guard Moengaroa Subritzky chipped in 10 points and three rebounds in a losing effort.
This Monday (12/22), Maryland Eastern Shore has a quick turnaround as they host in-state rival Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) at the Hytche Center. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.

East Carolina Pulls Away Late for Win over Norfolk State
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jada Payne tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds, and host East Carolina limited Norfolk State to 23 percent shooting in the Pirates' 65-36 win over the Spartans on Saturday evening at Minges Coliseum.
Rae Corbo scored 15 points to lead the Spartans (2-7), who lost their second straight.
Corbo was the only Spartan to score more than six points. Nia Roberts had six points and career highs of 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. The Spartans blocked a season-high seven shots as a team.
The 36 points are NSU's fewest since a 50-36 loss to Texas-Pan American last November.
The Spartans are off for a week before participating in the Seawolves Holiday Classic hosted by Stony Brook on Dec. 28-29. NSU plays Holy Cross on Sunday, Dec. 28 and Stony Brook on Monday, Dec. 29.

Morgan State Drops Opener Of Christmas Classic To Host Chattanooga, 55-40
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - For nearly 26 minutes the Morgan State women’s basketball team was right there with a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) squad which this season had already defeated perennial powers, the University of Tennessee and Stanford.
However, in the end yet another second half scoring drought would do in the Lady Bears, as they dropped a 55-40 decision to the host Lady Mocs in the opening round of the Chattanooga Christmas Classic on Saturday afternoon at McKenzie Arena.
The Lady Bears would then scored the final four points of the half, including a layup by Farrar as time expired to bring the guests within 24-22 at the break.
Morgan State finished the game shooting 25 percent (15-of-60) from the floor and 64 percent (9-of-14) from the free throw line. Chattanooga shot 41 percent (19-of-46) for the game and went 13-of-20 (65 percent) from the free throw line.
Morgan State will next face Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Dec. 21 at noon to close out the Chattanooga Christmas Classic. Fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe North Carolina A&T defeated Tennessee Tech, 54-49 in the opening game on Saturday. This will be the second all-time meeting between the Lady Bears and the Golden Eagles with Tennessee Tech holding a 1-0 series lead.
