Pair of Hawks earn ECAC Bowling Weekly Honors

DANBURY, Conn. — After the record-setting weekend, accolades continue to pile in for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s bowling team.  The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced that Mariana Alvarado was named the Corvias Co-Bowler of the Week and that Thashaina Seraus was named the Corvias Rookie of the Week, for the week ending December 7th.

Alvarado dominated last weekend at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Meet #2 leading the Hawks to a perfect 10-0 mark, extending their conference record to 20-0 overall.  She led the field individually in pinfall and average with 1,145 total pins over five games and a 229 average.  She tallied a high-game of a 262 in the win against Coppin State.

Alvarado had a 60% strike percentage for the weekend and was 100% on single-pin spares (23-23). She closed 21 of 25 frames in the 10th frame with a mark on the second day. Alvarado was also in anchor position against Coppin State, when UMES set a school record for pin fall in a five-game Baker match with an 1106-656 win.

She shares the honor with Fairleigh Dickinson’s Liat Vizenfeld who had a 55.6 % strike percentage leading the Knights to a 7-0 weekend in the Northeast Conference (NEC).

Seraus didn’t have to share the award with anybody.  She dominated as well, taking second overall at the same MEAC North meet.  She has a 50% strike percentage during Sunday’s Baker matches.  She tallied 1,089 pins to average a 217.8 while rolling a 266, also in the Coppin State win.  Seraus was bowling fourth in the lineup that set the school record pin fall on Sunday.

These are the first ECAC awards for the season for UMES while earlier in the week it was announced that Alvarado was named MEAC Bowler of the Week, the third weekly selection for a UMES bowler this season.

UMES is off until mid-January when they return to the lanes in Jonesboro, Ark.
