Hampton sweeps past Delaware State

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team got back into the win column Friday evening in Holland Hall, beating MEAC rival Delaware State 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-14).

The Lady Pirates (16-10, 9-1 MEAC) have won 11 of their last 13 matches.

Head coach Karen Weatherington picked up her 98th career win, leaving her just two shy of 100.

Senior rightside Vendula Strakova led the way with 15 kills, while adding 17 digs for her 16th double-double of the season. Both she and senior outside hitter Sonja Maksimovic hit .500 for the match; Maksimovic had 11 kills.

Junior Allysa Medina added nine kills, while senior Krista Kraskura had nine digs.

Senior setter Kitija Megne had 33 assists.

The Lady Pirates hit .362 (44 kills, 10 errors in 94 attacks) for the match, while holding Delaware State to just .078 hitting. Hampton also held an 8.0-5.0 edge in team blocks, though the Hornets (1-23, 1-9 MEAC) led in aces 6-4.

The Lady Pirates will have their home finale on Sunday, celebrating Senior Day against Maryland Eastern Shore at 3 p.m.

Hawks drop first set before turning around in final three sets

NORFOLK, Va.  — With just three games remaining on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s schedule this year, the Hawks are playing for pride while attempting to add a couple more victories before the season is complete.

They got off to a good start Friday night with their four set win over the Norfolk State Spartans on the road in Echols Hall. The Hawks improve to 11-16 and 4-7 in the MEAC while the Spartans fall to 1-22 and 1-10 in the MEAC.

Two UMES players registered 10 kills on the night, junior Ashley Smith and freshman Kirstin Fink. Fink also led in attack percentage at .231, while fellow freshman Alana Polk went 7-for-22 with two errors to finish at .227. Sophomore Allison Woods led with 15 digs, and Smith along with sophomore Precious Manu tallied 13 digs each. Four Hawks contributed an ace—Smith, Fink, Manu and sophomore Sonia Rosales.

Tori Tulensru led the Spartans with a game-high 13 kills and Angie Darcus also put up double figures with 10. Norfolk State libero Noelle Eagles also earned a game-high with 20 digs.

The final road game of the 2014 season will take place on the campus of Hampton University in a 3:00p.m. Sunday matchup versus the top seeded Lady Pirates.

Coppin State falls on the road in non-conference action

NEWARK, N.J. – The Coppin State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to New Jersey Institute of Technology in a non-conference match Friday night at the Fleischer Center.

Despite a team-high 16 kills from senior Ariel Richard and 35 assists from Chelsee Sauni, the Eagles fell by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 17-25, 25-14. The setback ended Coppin State’s three-match winning streak and dropped its record to 13-12 overall.

Sauni set a program standard for most assists in a season, topping the mark of 1,045 she had last season. With her performance against NJIT, Sauni upped her season total to 1,052.

For Richard, it was the 60th time in her career that she finished with double-digit kills in a match. Freshman Maya Horner added 10 digs for the Eagles. Three Eagles also collected at least 10 digs: Gabrielle Otero (17 digs), Nicole Malave-Adams (13) and Bailee Jackson (11).

NJIT (10-19) was paced by 20 kills from Danica Vukotic and 33 assists from Alyssa Armada.

Coppin State closes its 2014 regular season when it visits Howard for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division match beginning at 3:00 p.m.
