Bethune-Cookman's Crawford Logs Career Night to Push the Lady Wildcats Past Lynn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Riding the strength of a career night for team captain Kayla Crawford, the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats earned their first victory of the year on Saturday afternoon, pushing aside a first half Lynn University rally to top the Fighting Knights, 67-48, at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Crawford shared the team scoring high with Kailyn Williams, each notching 17 points; a career high for Crawford. The redshirt senior captain also logged her first career double-double, grabbing a career-high-tying 15 rebounds, in addition to four steals. K. Williams grabbed five (5) boards of her own.

Hitting a pair of threes and four (4) free throws in the second half, Kendra Cooper finished the day with 15 points as the third Lady Wildcats player to reach double figures.

The Lady Wildcats (1-5) have one more in the brief homestand, facing Edward Waters on Tuesday (Dec. 2) at Moore Gymnasium, before opening conference play on the road next week at Savannah State.

Coppin State downs Virginia Union

BALTIMORE – The Coppin State women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the season by defeating Virginia Union, 68-54, in the Physical Education Complex Saturday afternoon.

Before stepping onto the court, senior Bria Harris let last year’s narrow two-point victory serve as a reminder and decided it wouldn’t happen again.

Harris and junior Janelle Lane combined for 60 percent of the Eagles’ total scoring with 41 points. Harris finished with a career-high 21 points and nine rebounds. She has eight career games scoring double digits and three this season.

Lane earned her first double-double of the season on a career-best 20 points and 10 rebounds. She has scored in double figures in four of the five games this season. This is the 11th time in her career that she has posted double digits.

Amber Griffin and Omaah Tayong also helped out for the Eagles. Griffin added eight points. Tayong tallied seven points and 10 rebounds.

For the Panthers, Lady Walker and Ashle Freeman scored 16 points apiece.

Looking ahead, Coppin State is preparing for a two-week road trip starting at the University of Georgia on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Lady Hornets Fall 91-78 to UNLV to Open Lady Rebel Round-Up

LAS VEGAS – In what was the first game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (1-5) shot a season-best 56 percent (35-of-63) from the floor Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Lady Hornets fell to host UNLV (3-2), 91-78.

With this loss, DSU dropped to 0-5 on the road this season, while the Rebels snapped a two-game skid to move a game above .500.

Both teams scored a combined 90 points in the paint, whereas UNLV finished the afternoon shooting 55 percent (33-of-60) from the field, led by Cesarz’s game-high 24 points (9-of-16).  Danielle Miller, who came into today’s contest sitting 20th (23.3 ppg) in the nation in scoring, tallied 20 points (5-of-5) and went a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.  Down low, center Aley Rohde finished with 15 points (7-of-10) and a game-high seven rebounds.

For DSU, four players scored in double figures, led by Tierra Hawkins’ 23 points (11-of-15) and forward Amber Bogard chipping in with 15 points (6-of-9).

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will conclude the Lady Rebel Round-Up tomorrow at 3 p.m. against the loser of South Dakota State and Northern Illinois.

Roberts' Career Game Lifts NSU over Tenn. State in OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Kayla Roberts scored a career-high 23 points, and visiting Norfolk State earned its first win of the season by outscoring Tennessee State 10-3 in overtime of a 65-58 win on the first day of the Teresa Phillips Thanksgiving Classic at the Gentry Center on Saturday.

Roberts hit what proved to be the go-ahead layup a minute and a half into the extra session. The Spartan defense did the rest, holding the Lady Tigers without a basket over the final four and a half minutes of overtime. All told, NSU (1-4) held TSU (1-4) to just 1-of-6 shooting in the overtime stanza.

Rae Corbo added 18 points and a team-high five assists for the Spartans. She was 6-of-17 from the floor, but 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Roberts shot 8-of-13 from the floor, 2-of-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-8 from the line. She also had a team-high eight boards, matching her career best.

Corbo and Roberts were the only two Spartans in double figures, but Ebony Brown added a season-high eight points and three steals off the bench. Spicer had six points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Chelsea Hudson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for TSU, which was held to 36 percent shooting and committed 20 turnovers.

The Spartans face Nicholls State (1-2) at 1 p.m. (noon CT) on Sunday on the final day of the tournament.
