B-CU Concludes Play at FDU N.J. Jamboree
NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Bethune-Cookman bowling team dropped three matches in bracket play on Sunday, completing the Wildcats stay at the 2014 FDU New Jersey Jamboree, hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson at Carolier Lanes.
A day after a perfect 6-0 mark in traditional match play, the Wildcats faced off against top-level competition in Sunday’s bracket format on the final day of the three-day tournament. The Cats entered the bracket portion in 12th place, seeking a possibility of finishing as high as ninth overall.
All matches on Sunday were bowled in Baker format.
Bethune-Cookman dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Valparaiso in the opener, in a match that went back-and-forth throughout. Valpo claimed a 190-169 victory in the final game of the seven-game set, dropping the Wildcats to the next level of competition.
In their second match, the Wildcats faced Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent Delaware State, dropping a 4-1 decision at the hands of the Hornets. DSU competes in the MEAC Northern Division. Thus, the Cats never see them during the conference season, except at the MEAC Championships.
The third and final match of the day for B-CU was a 4-1 setback at the hands of Long Island-Brooklyn.
The Maroon and Gold finished in 14th place overall on the weekend.
Bethune-Cookman gets back to action next at the first MEAC Southern Division event of the 2014-15 campaign, hosted by North Carolina A&T on November 8-9, in Greensboro, N.C.

Hawks finish eighth at N.J. Jamboree
ELMWOOD PARK, N.J.—Too bad day two couldn’t have been repeated on day three. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s bowling team couldn’t find their way into the win column on the final day of the New Jersey Jamboree, dropping all three best four-of-seven Baker matches to fall from sixth place to finish eighth place overall. UMES ended the tournament with a 7-7 record.
Last season they finished this same event in ninth place before taking third in the nation at the NCAA Championships to wrap up the season.
UMES opened the day as the sixth seed, taking on fifth-seed Arkansas State. Head Coach Kayla Bandy set her first Baker match lineup of the season with Thashaina Seraus leading off, Victoira Jones, Sara Pelayo and Valerie Riggin two through four and Tatiana Munoz in anchor.
UMES got off to a good start, taking game one 232-181, but that was all the damage they could do. They dropped game two 215-172 and game three 203-144 to trail 2-1. Game four was back and forth with the Red Wolves, inching out a 3-1 lead with a 224-223 one-pin win. Game five was almost as close as UMES fell 245-224 and the match 4-1.
The Hawks dropped in the bracket to take on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the next round. UMES juggled the lineup, putting Riggin in lead-off, moving Munoz to third and Pelayo to fourth. Seraus went to anchor. They took game one on the left lane 215-181 but when UMES moved to the right lane they struggled and the War Hawks tied the match at one apiece with a 225-155 win. Back on the left lane UMES won 211-194 in game three but the left lane ruled in game four with UWW taking the win 233-203 and tying the match at two each. The right lane finally gave in the fifth game with UWW taking the win 267-246 and then carrying the momentum into game six with a 246-202 win to take the match 4-2.
UMES then moved on to face fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe North Carolina A&T with the same line-up. The Aggies jumped out to top the Hawks 194-174 and take the lead but UMES soared back 205-190 to even the match at one apiece. The Aggies took game three 191-180 but again UMES answered back with a 186-143 win. Just like in the last match, game five did in the Hawks as the Aggies rolled a 243 and UMES posted a solid 223, but dropped the lead 3-2. The Hawks couldn’t answer in game six, falling 231-193 and falling to finish in eighth place with A&T taking seventh.
Fairleigh Dickinson won their own tournament with Sam Houston State taking second. Arkansas State took third with a perfect 13-0 record while Vanderbilt took fourth. Wisconsin-Whitewater battled to a fifth place finish and Stephen F. Austin took sixth. Fellow MEAC schools Delaware State, Bethune-Cookman and Coppin State were also in the field and finished 12th, 14th and 23rd respectively.
UMES bowls next weekend in their first MEAC Northern Division match-up in Washington D.C. on November 8-9, looking to get back on track.
