UMES posts a 5-1 record on the second day

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J.—The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s bowling team rolled around a complete 180 degrees, bowling almost opposite of their day one performance at the 2014 New Jersey Jamboree.  After a 2-3 day record on day one and finishing in 12th place, UMES went 5-1 on day two and climbed all the way to sixth place overall.

UMES opened the day with a win over Cheyney (991-890) in the traditional format.  Five more games in that format would await and the Hawks kept getting better.  They then knocked off Virginia State 1013-728, tossing their first 1,000 plus game of the weekend.

Next up was Stephen F. Austin.  The Jacks got the better of UMES 1017-1063, but the Hawks still improved their totals and tossed another 1,000 plus game.

Felecian was the next team to fall to the Hawks (1058-826) as they felt UMES’ disappointment with the previous loss.  The momentum continued for the Hawks as next they faced long-time rival Vanderbilt.

UMES was on fire, throwing a 1065 again getting better and picking up an important out of region win as the Commodores tossed a 1053.  The Hawks concluded with another central school in Valparaiso and while their total decreased for the first time on the day, they cruised past the Crusaders 998-941.

Newcomer Thashaina Seraus showed no signs of nerves, tallying a 1367 over six games to average an amazing 227.83.  As impressive as that is, she finished sixth overall on the high scoring pattern.  Seraus tossed games of 259, a 157, 267, 258, 177 and 249.

Senior Tatiana Munoz was almost as good, totaling a 1314 over her six games to average a 219.  She was consistent all day, tossing a 198, 215, 200, 247, a team high on the day 268 against Vanderbilt, and a 186.  She would finish 14th overall in the field of 184.

Sara Pelayo would finish 55th overall, bowling five out of six games on day two.  She averaged a 187.4 over the two days, tossing games of 215, 208, and 218 as her best.

Victoria Jones and Valerie Riggin.  They stood 87th and 90th overall, still both in the top half of the field.  Jones tossed a 202 and 232 in the first two games of day two and finished the day with a 213.  Riggin tossed a 214 in the fifth game of the day against Vanderbilt.  Justyne Falbo was 106th in average but tossed a 223 in the win over Virginia State.

UMES climbed from 12th place to move up to sixth place.  They had a two day total of 10, 621 pins, trailing fifth place Arkansas State who had 10, 914 pins, by 293 pins.  Host Fairleigh Dickinson is the top seed with 11,386 pins and Sam Houston State has 11,220 in second place.  Stephen F. Austin is third with 11,162 pins and Vanderbilt is fourth with 11,139 pins.  Ten thousand five-hundred is the number that teams had to reach to make the top eight of the bracket.  Wisconsin-Whitewater and North Carolina A&T were seventh and eighth with 10,585 and 10,543 pins respectively.

UMES will face Arkansas State first thing Sunday morning in the start of the bracket round at 9:00 a.m.  They will bowl three matches in the best four-of-seven Baker format to determine the final standings.
