Norfolk State drops decision to Hofstra

NORFOLK, Va. - Elo Edeferioka had game highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Hofstra limited Norfolk State to 30.5 percent shooting in a 64-47 Pride victory on Sunday afternoon at Echols Hall.

The taller Pride (2-2) outscored NSU (0-4) 36-18 in the paint and used a stingy zone defense to keep the Spartans winless on the year.

NSU shot just 18-of-59 for the game and 6-of-27 (22 percent) in the second half. For the second straight game, the Spartans failed to make a 3-pointer, missing all nine of their attempts. NSU was 0-of-14 behind the arc Thursday night at Radford.

Rae Corbo and Aivah Parham led NSU with nine points apiece. Brehanna Daniels had a season-high eight. Corbo grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Kayla Roberts added six. Corbo also tallied four assists and four steals.

The Spartans return to action next weekend in the Teresa Phillips Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Tennessee State in Nashville, Tenn. NSU plays host Tennessee State on Saturday, then Nicholls State next Sunday.

First Half Offensive Struggles Doom Bethune-Cookman in Loss

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Despite a solid run in the second half, the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats were unable to recover from a tough offensive letdown in the first half, and fell to the East Carolina Pirates, 71-42, at Williams Arena on Sunday (Nov. 23) afternoon.

Featuring a team with tested offensive firepower, East Carolina capitalized on a stalled B-CU offense in the opening period, building up a 22-point halftime lead on their home court to set the stage for their fifth win. The Pirates limited the Lady Wildcats to 9.7 percent shooting in the first half to create the 34-12 deficit.

Stymied in the first half, sophomore guard Kendra Cooper came on strong in the second half to lead all Lady Wildcat scorers with 12 points. Coming off the bench to aid B-CU in the first period, freshman point guard Emily Williams tallied her first double-digit scoring performance, putting up 11 points.

Providing the Lady Wildcats with a defensive post presence, redshirt sophomore Kailyn Williams tallied team highs of 12 rebounds, six (6) steals and two (2) blocks. Kayla Crawford and Terrenisha Hollis collected eight (8) rebounds apiece to aid the Lady Wildcats to in outrebounding the hot-shooting Pirates with a season best 49-48 margin on the boards.

After putting in five games across just 10 days to open the season, the Lady Wildcats will get an opportunity to rest up and return home until after the holiday, next returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 29 versus Lynn University at historic Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Maryland Eastern Shore drops road contest to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team fell to Marshall, 74-57, inside the Cam Henderson Center. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-4 overall while the Herd moved to 3-0 on the season.

UMES outrebounded the Herd, 50-32, and outscored Marshall’s bench, 34-12. Junior TeAmber Burke recorded her first career double-double, 20 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Mariah McCoy added 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Other notable Hawk performances included senior Jessica Long netting 12 points and a season-high nine boards while Alexis Udoji filled the sheet, posting nine rebounds, six points, four blocks in 34 minutes of action.

For the Herd, Leah Scott had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-11 from the floor. Norrisha Victrum added 17 points and six boards in the victory.

On Nov. 25, Maryland Eastern Shore returns to the Hytche Center before their Thanksgiving break as they take on Cheyney (Pa.). Tip-off is booked for 6:00 p.m.
