Men's Basketball Recap: November 22

Spartans Down Texas Southern, 76-66

NORFOLK, Va. – A 28-point effort by Chris Thomas went for naught for Texas Southern, which was doomed by a long scoring drought in the second half. That cold spell became the difference as the Norfolk State men’s basketball team earned a 76-66 victory over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU got a solid outing from the duo of senior Malik Thomas and junior D’Shon Taylor to rebound after a loss to Boston University earlier in the week. For the second game in a row, Thomas surpassed his career high in points, pouring in 20 on 7-of-12 shooting against the Tigers. He also added a game-high 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

Taylor, meanwhile, broke out of a slump with a 19-point effort. He shot 7-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-4 from long range, and also added four rebounds to help NSU improve to 2-2 overall.

Chris Thomas shot 9-of-21 for Texas Southern (0-4), including 8-of-11 from the free throw line, to lead all scorers with 28 points, including 17 in the first half.

NSU held the rebounding edge, 37-31, and also outscored the Tigers 36-24 in points in the paint.

The Spartans will hit the road for four straight games, beginning with a Tuesday night matchup at Vanderbilt. Game time in 8 p.m. EST.

Saint Francis holds off Maryland Eastern Shore

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team fell behind early to Saint Francis University, but the Hawks fought all the way back to tie the game in the final minutes. However, the Red Flash persevered in the later stages, spoiling the comeback bid with a 57-53 final score. With the last minute defeat, the Hawks fall to 1-4 on the season.

The Red Flash were led by 19 points and 10 rebounds from Earl Brown. Mike Myers topped the Hawks with 10 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Both offenses were very efficient, hitting over 40% of their shots from the floor. The Hawks continued their improvement in free throw shooting, going 9-of-10 on Saturday afternoon. UMES used the full-court pressure to much advantage, creating 11 steals and scoring 19 points off Red Flash turnovers.

UMES will now travel to Toledo, Ohio to play a pair of games in association with the 2014 Progressive Legends Classic. On Monday, the Hawks will face the Detroit Titans with tip-off at 4:30 p.m. and then UMES will square off against either Toledo or Bucknell on Tuesday with the game time dependent on the result of their first contest.
