Savannah State knocks off Alabama State for second win
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women’s basketball continued to dominate on their home court Thursday night, taking down Alabama State, 71-62, for their second win in Tiger Arena this year.
Last year, the Lady Tigers went 10-2 in Tiger Arena, setting a new Division I record for women’s basketball in the 12-year old arena.
It was the 14th match between the two schools. SSU tied up the series record, garnering their 7th win over the Lady Hornets.
Ezinne Kalu led the field with a season-high 25 points, hitting 11-of-16 field goal attempts. Tiyonda Davis and Jasmine Norman each scored a season-high 12 points in the game. Davis led in rebounds with eight.
Wright led the Lady Hornets with 19 points, followed by Miracle Mayo with 11 points. Daniele Ewert tacked on 10 in the loss.
SSU takes a 10-day break before heading to Alabama to take on Troy University on November 30.

Lady Rattlers pick up first win of season against Webber International
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (1-2, 0-0 MEAC) got their first win of the season 52-41 over Webber International University today at the Al Lawson Center.
Taneka Rubin led the Lady Rattler assault with 18 points, followed by Kenya Dixon who chipped in 11 points. In all, eight Lady Rattlers scored on the day. Lorena Hubbard cleared the boards with 14 rebounds for the Lady Rattlers.
Jurnee Pettigrew, led all scorers with 19 for Webber. Jessica Colson added the only other double digit scorer with 12 points. Pettigrew and Amber Ferguson pulled down five rebounds each to lead WIU.
The Lady Rattlers improved remarkably on their shooting from the field, carding a 40-percent clip from the field for the game. The strong defensive effort by the Lady Rattlers held WIU to just 27.1 percent for the game. FAMU also shot 77-percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Rattlers will face the Troy University Trojans, Mon. Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Al Lawson Center.

Avery Leads Radford Past Norfolk State in overtime
RADFORD, Va. - Ayana Avery scored 22 points, 14 in overtime, to help host Radford pull away for a 74-65 win over Norfolk State on Thursday evening at the Dedmon Center.
The Spartans dropped to 0-3 with the loss, while the Highlanders improved to 1-1.
Freshman forward Kayla Roberts notched career highs with 20 points and eight rebounds for NSU, which led by as many as eight in the second half before having to rally to force the extra session.
NSU shot just 31 percent (21-of-67) from the floor on the night, including just 18 percent (2-of-11) in overtime. The Spartans went 0-of-14 from 3-point range.
Radford didn't fare much better, hitting on just 38 percent of its field goal attempts (23-of-60). The Highlanders did make 35 percent of their 3-pointers, shooting 7-of-20. Avery was 4-of-10 from long range.
The Spartans did force 20 Radford turnovers and had their best rebounding effort of the year, edging the Highlanders 49-45 on the glass. Sophomore forward Amber Brown had a career-high 11 rebounds while Roberts had a career-best eight for NSU.
Roberts was 6-of-16 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Corbo scored 18 points on 5-of-18 shooting from the floor, but an 8-of-9 effort from the charity stripe. Parham chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Brown handed out a career-high five assists.
For Radford, Gilmore added 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Foy scored 12 points.
The Spartans return home for a 4 p.m. game Sunday against Hofstra.

Jacksonville Holds Off Bethune-Cookman
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After a tight game throughout, the Lady Wildcats fell to the Jacksonville Dolphins, 64-51, on Thursday night at Swisher Gymnasium.
Kendra Cooper led the Lady Wildcats with 16 points on the night, hitting four (4) threes, while also logging three (3) assists. Crawford and Hollis each scored eight (8) points. Kailyn Williams tallied seven (7) points with four (4) rebounds and four (4) blocks. Her career block count moves to 109, tying her with Sarah Bolden for the second most blocks in school history.
The Lady Wildcats fall to 0-4 on the season and continue their extended road trip into the weekend, traveling to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Rams spoil Lady Hawks’ home opener
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – After two tough road games against Georgetown and Virginia Tech, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team came home to face Atlantic-10 foe Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) in their home opener.
UMES was unable to slow down VCU’s hot shooting from beyond the arc as they fell to the Rams, 72-50. With the setback, the club dropped to 0-3 on the season while VCU improved to 3-1 overall.
Senior guard Jessica Long scored a game-high 17 points, netting 15 points after intermission. Long only had five attempts in the contest, but very efficient as she shot 60-percent (3-of-5) from the field. The Fort Washington-native aggressively attacked the rim, going to the line 16 times while making 11 freebies. With her efforts, Long moved into eighth place on the all-time made free throws list, surpassing Kristi Sheldon (1996-99).
Senior guard Shawnee Sweeney ended her night with 12 points, five boards, and a steal. Despite a tough night from the field, Sweeney made history as she moved into a second place tie on the all-time made three-pointers list with 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Year and local native Casey Morton (2008-11).
Other notable Hawks included Udoji posting 11 points, seven boards, and five blocks while Moengaroa Subritzky added eight points, all in the first half, and a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
For the Rams, they shot 50-percent (9-of-18) from beyond the arc, led by Isis Thorpe and Ashley Pegram. Thorpe finished with a team-high 15 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, while Pegram had 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point land.
Maryland Eastern Shore has a quick turnaround as they head to Huntington, W.Va. to face Marshall for the first time this Saturday (11/22). Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
