UMES names Cunningham assistant bowling coach

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Head Women’s Bowling Coach Kayla Bandy has named G. Brett Cunningham as the new assistant coach for the program, it was announced recently.  Cunningham is no stranger to the bowling world, having bowled collegiately at Mohawk Valley Community College for two seasons and then at Lindenwood University for two more.

“We are thrilled to have Brett on board,” said Bandy.  “We brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the team and I am confident he can have an impact right away.”

As a college bowler, Cunningham was a two-time All-America selection at Lindenwood, earned two First-Team Junior College All-America nods at MVCC where he was also an NJCAA doubles national champion.  He earned spots on 12 All-Tournament Teams and won three individual titles.  For his four years combined he averaged over a 203.5 for his college career.

Cunningham is now a full PBA (Professional Bowler’s Association) member, having finished as high as 25th nationally in 2013 and placing third on seven different occasions at regional events.  As an amateur he has won four titles, including the Fire and Ice and Insidebowling.com events in 2013.  He was named the Gran Prix Tour Player of the Year, 2009-2010, winning three titles along the way.  He also has won three youth bowling tour titles and took third place at the Teen Masters.

Cunningham is on staff with several bowling companies in addition to having worked lane maintenance at the 2014 USBC Women’s Championships in Reno, Nev. for the three-month long event.  Knowledgeable in oiling, lane preparation and stripping, patterns and ball reaction, Cunningham brings a high skill set to the Hawks.

He has also worked in bowling media, serving as a broadcast color commentator on several events, including Insidebowling.com live stream events.

“I am excited to be here,” said Cunningham.  “This is a great program with a great legacy and I am honored to be able to help try and grow that.”

Originally from Clay, N.Y., the 26-year old has bowled on the PBA Tour since 2012.
