UMES Closes out MEAC North Meet with perfect day

HYATTSVILLE, Md.--The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s (UMES) women’s bowling team concluded the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) northern division play with another perfect 5-0 record today and improved to 10-0 in league play and 17-7 overall.

The No. 5 ranked Hawks finished the day in first place with their 5-0 record while #19 Delaware State went 4-1.  Morgan State was 3-2, Howard was 2-3, Coppin State was 1-4 and Hampton was 0-5.  Those standings would mirror the final results as the Hawks went 10-0, Delaware State 7-3, Morgan State 6-4, Howard 5-5, Coppin State 2-8 and Hampton at 0-10.

The Hawks won the day with a total pinfall of 4,759, besting DSU by 410 pins.

UMES topped Howard to open the day.  They easily rolled past the Bison 918-740 in the total-pinfall five-game Baker format.  The Hawks opened with a 243 and never looked back.  Next up was rival Delaware State.  The Hornets made a match of it as UMES edged them 968-945.  The Hawks opened with a 232 to start the scoring.  They didn’t roll another 200 plus game the rest of the match and DSU got two, a 205 and a 202, but UMES kept it close enough after they built the 54 pin lead in game one.

The third match was against Coppin State.  UMES soared over the Eagles 972-583, posting three 200 plus games (203, 225 and 206).  The fourth match was Hampton and UMES cruised 882-645 winning all five games easily.  The Hawks closed out the day with a win over Morgan State 1019-748 for their highest pinfall of the day in the five game set.  UMES built a huge lead to start, winning game one 223-115 and then adding a 215 and a 212 over the next two games.

Coach Kayla Bandy juggled her lineup throughout the day, getting freshman Melanie Copey her first taste of collegiate bakers in the wins over Coppin State and Hampton.  She also used four different lead-off bowlers and a pair of different anchors, taking advantage of the opportunity to try different lineups.

UMES got solid play from Valerie Riggin who filled 94% of her 50 frames bowled, all in the third position.  Victoria Jones, coming off a solid day yesterday, combined with Thashaina Seraus to mark in the tenth frame 21 of the 25 baker games.  Jones bowled four of those games in anchor while Seraus carried the load in the fifth spot.

Sara Pelayo who bowled lead-off in two matches and second in another filled almost 90% of her 28 frames for a solid showing.

Tatiana Munoz, who led the Hawks yesterday, wasn’t quite as good on Sunday, but combined on both days and had a 92% single-pin spare percentage and a 43% strike percentage, which can be thought of similar to a batting average, meaning on the weekend she would have struck 43 times out of 100 frames thrown, her best percentage for a tournament in her career.

UMES hosts the Hawk Classic next weekend, an 18-team tournament hosted by Millsboro Lanes, in Millsboro, Del.  Action starts Friday, November 14th and ends Sunday, November 16th.

Spartans Finish 3-5 at MEAC Southern Divisional Meet

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State bowling team finished with a 3-5 record after the first MEAC Southern Divisional of the year that took place this weekend at All Star Lanes and was hosted by North Carolina A&T.

The Spartans went just 1-3 on Saturday in traditional play but rebounded to go 2-2 on Sunday in Baker play. NSU finished out the weekend on a good note, topping North Carolina A&T in the last game of the divisional and in the process handing the Aggies their only loss on the weekend.

On Sunday, NSU opened things up with an 858-690 win over North Carolina Central, topped off by a 214 in the last of the four games. The Spartans dropped a 964-852 contest to Bethune-Cookman and then were unable to top Florida A&M, losing 871-852 despite a pair of 200 games.

After the Spartans had a bye, North Carolina A&T had its worse showing of the day in the last game and Norfolk State had its best. That allowed the Spartans to sneak by with an 886-810 victory.

Saturday also saw the Spartans come away with a win over North Carolina Central, 919-727 in the second game of the day. NSU had opened up the divisional with a 924-873 loss to Bethune-Cookman. After the victory over the Eagles, the Spartans ran into a buzzsaw in the Aggies, who claimed victory by a 1,070-848 margin.

NSU fell in its final match, 866-824, to Florida A&M before finishing out the day with a bye.

Junior Carrie Hickey led NSU on Saturday by averaging 190.5 for all four games. Senior Delilah Bethel was second on the team with a 179.8 average in four games. Senior Ashley Buck tallied a 213, NSU’s only 200 game of the day, and averaged 177.7 in three games.

Senior Kelsea Yarbrough bowled all four games, while senior Courtney Brown competed in three. Senior Courtney Williford and freshman Meagan Marciano each bowled in one game.

North Carolina A&T finished 7-1 overall at the divisional, claiming the early lead in the standings heading into December’s divisional hosted by Norfolk State. Bethune-Cookman went 6-2 and Florida A&M posted a 4-4 overall record. NSU (3-5) and North Carolina Central (0-8) rounded out the standings.

The Spartans did end the divisional ahead of Florida A&M in total pinfall, with NSU tallying 6,912 pins compared to 6,867 for the Rattlers.

The Spartans will compete next at the UMES Hawk Classic from this Friday through Sunday in Millsboro, Del.
