Hawks go 2-3 to start FDU New Jersey Jamboree.
ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — The University of Maryland Eastern SHORE (UMES) women’s bowling team struggled through day one of the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) New Jersey Jamboree, managing just a pair of wins, while taking three losses, all to teams who made last season’s NCAA Championship field.
UMES opened up against Arkansas State University, last season’s No. 1 team for most of the year. The Red Wolves had their revenge against the Hawks, the team that eliminated them from the 2014 NCAA Championships. ASU topped UMES 851-838.
The Hawks didn’t get much better in the second match, rolling an 813, but luckily for them they faced Pitt-Bradford, who posted just a 676 to give the Hawks their first win of the season. They went back-to-back taking a win over Franklin Pierce and improving dramatically, posting a 968 to their opponents 822.
Next up was Wisconsin-Whitewater. UMES tossed a 923 but the War Hawks were better by almost one hundred pins, posting a 1019. To finish the day the Hawks ran into Sam Houston State, the defending NCAA Champions and the squad that eliminated UMES in last year’s championships on route to the finals. They rolled past UMES with a 1014 to the Hawks’ 937.
UMES got a high game from newcomer Thashaina Seraus, who rolled a 234 in the final match. She also had the highest average of the day with just under a 189. Seraus unfortunately seemed to summer from some nerves in her first college tournament, rolling a 152 and 148 in her first two matches before settling down to toss a 212, 198 and 234 to finish the day.
Senior Valerie Riggin was also solid, posting a 186.6 average. She again finished strong with a 177, 225, 175 and 203 in the final four games, recovering from a 153 in the first match.
Fellow senior Tatiana Munoz averaged over a 185, tossing games of 193, 191 and 194 along the way.
UMES stands in 12th place overall after day one with 4, 479 pins. They trail St. Francis (Pa.) by 74 pins and 10th place Valparaiso by 178 pins. First place Sam Houston State had 5,107 pins, 628 pins ahead of the Hawks.
UMES bowls six more traditional team games tomorrow starting at 9:00 a.m.
