LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. --- The Delaware State University volleyball team put up a solid effort in the attempt for its first win of the season, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-0 loss at Rider on Wednesday.
The scores were 25-21, 25-21 and 21-19. The Hornets are now 0-14 on the season, while the Broncs improved to 11-7.
In the first set, the score was 2-2 before the Hornets used an 8-3 run to take control. DSU opened up a 10-5 lead on a kill by NaKia Jones off a feed from Taylor Marshall.
Rider answered with a 14-3 run, and pulled ahead 19-13 on a DSU attack error.
Delaware State scored seven of the next 11 points to cut the Broncs’ lead to 23-20, but could get no closer.
The second set featured 11 ties. The Hornets trailed 11-7 early in the set, but fought back to even the score at 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18.
Rider pulled ahead in the set for good, 19-18, on a kill by McKayla Huntly.
In the third set, the Hornets trailed 7-3, but battled to tie the score at 10 on a kill by Brooke Redmon.
The third set was also tied at 14, 16, 17 and 19 before Rider scored the last six points for the match win.
Delaware State posted a .054 hitting percentage in the contest, collecting 29 kills and 22 errors on 129 attacks.
Rider tallied 38 kills and 21 errors on 133 attempts for a .128 hitting percentage in the match.
Jennifer Borio led all players with 14 kills for Rider, while teammate Kaitlyn Griffin added 12.
Nevershi Ellis led Delaware State with seven kills. She also collected nine digs in the match. Three DSU players had double figures in digs, led by Ayanna Lee’s 17.
The Hornets return to action on Friday (Oct. 10) at home against Coppin State. The MEAC contest begins at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
