Lady Pirates second, Pirates sixth in HBCU Challenge
CARY, N.C. – The Hampton University women’s cross country team finished second in the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge on Saturday morning, while the men’s cross country team finished sixth in the team standings.
The Lady Pirates tallied 78 points. Alabama State won the women’s team title.
Junior Ce’aira Brown paced the Lady Pirates, completing the 5K course in 19:07.90 to finish fourth. Sophomore Amanda Delacruz was the only other Hampton runner in the top 15, turning in a 19:44.30 to finish 11th.
Senior Malekah Holland finished 19th with a 20:22.30, and junior Kaylor Murray ran a 20:29.20 to finish 21st.
Sharon Kiptoo finished 28th with a 20:47.40, and Caren Bartuin ran a 21:21.50 to finish 34th.
The Pirates had 160 points, while North Carolina A&T won the men’s team title with 45 points.
Freshman Stanley Davis paced the Pirates, running a 27:48.50 on the 8K course to finish 21st. Senior Edose Ibadin ran a 28:54.60 to finish 33rd, and junior Quentin Morales-Perryman was 34th with a 29:00.70.
Freshman Eric Ellis ran a 29:08.80 to finish 35th, while senior Ramon Kelly was 43rd with a 29:37.30.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they compete in the Panther Classic in Richmond, Va.

Coward leads NCCU men to seventh place at Great American Cross Country Festival
CARY, N.C. - North Carolina Central University sophomore Greg Coward led the Eagles in the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge of the Great American Cross Country Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Cary, N.C., by placing 17th out of 115 contestants.
Coward recorded a time of 27 minutes, 32 seconds on the 8k course as the first Eagle to finish.
Behind Coward in 41st place was Orane Morais (29:27.1), followed by Jedrek Higgins (29:40.9) in 47th, Deondre James (30:41.2) in 58th, Victor Dunbar (30:53.2) in 62nd, and Kevin Vincent (31:45.4) in 73rd.
The NCCU men finished seventh out of 18 teams with 211 points.
On the women’s side, Amber Brooks paced the Lady Eagles with a time of 19 minutes, 45 seconds on the 5k course, placing 12th out of 114 competitors. Behind Brooks in 56th place was Shania Neely (22:47.5), Christa Landy (23:05.3) in 60th, Syrtia Hunt (23:07.5) in 61st, Regina Summerville (24:20.2) in 74th, Lovasia Thomas (25:04.9) in 81st, and Darlene Giradeau (27:54.7) in 102nd.
The Lady Eagles finished 10th out of 17 teams with 238 points.
NCCU will host its annual Eagle Classic in Durham, N.C., on Oct. 11 at 9:00 a.m.

North Carolina A&T Men repeat as Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge champions
CARY, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T men’s cross country team won the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge the second straight year. The men’s team was able to score 45 points to beat second-place Morehouse College (51).
Sophomore Darren White led the Aggies with a second-place finish at a personal best of 26:01 in the 8k. Senior Saeed Jones placed fourth in personal record time (26:21), while junior Perry Cabean finished third for the Aggies with his personal best of 27:05, placing 11th. Freshmen Steven Stowe (27:09) and David Conner (27:32) also were able to run their fastest times.
Freshman Miranda Green led the Aggie women to a sixth-place finish. Green placed seventh with a time of 19:29. Sophomore Daniqua Dye had the second highest finish for the Aggies with a personal best time of 20:23. Freshman Imani Coleman also recorded her best (20:34).
The Aggies next competition will be Friday, Oct. 17 at the Delaware State Invitational.
