Cross Country Recap: October 3

Hawks roll on with sweep of Farm Run Invitational

SMYRNA, Del. — In three meets so far this fall, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men’s and women’s cross country teams have not finished worse than second as a team collectively, with plenty of top ten individual finishes on both sides. Their first meet of October matched those expectations as the Hawks achieved both a team and individual sweep of six men’s teams and seven women’s teams at the Farm Run Invitational, hosted by Delaware State University.

With a score of 31 points, the men’s team kept their four meet win streak alive by a narrow margin, edging Norfolk State by two. As it has been all season long, sophomore Khalil Rmidi Kinnini captured the victory with a time of 25:00.1 in the 8k race. Likewise, his freshman teammate Nelson Kimutai clocked in a 26:46.3 time to place second, and junior Mark Tuwei finished third with a time of 26:54.7, earning his highest finish as a Hawk. Sophomore Derrick Cheruiyot earned eleventh place with a time of 27:40.7 and freshman Stanley Meli took fourteenth with a time of 27:58.9 to round out the team score for UMES.

A score of 38 team points for the Lady Hawks forced a tie with the Morgan State Bears, but Hawk sophomore Barbora Blahutova earned her third consecutive win, giving UMES the tiebreaker for their second straight team victory. Blahutova finished the 5k race with a time of 18:28.8.

Three other Lady Hawks earned top ten finishes in the race. Junior Shantol Hemley finished seventh with a 19:45.3 clip, while sophomore Rachel Halmon ran a time of 19:56.2 to finish ninth. Junior Jheniel Kelly rounded out the top ten with her time of 19:56.8, and freshman Janice Lane finished just over 20 minutes to place eleventh and round out the women’s team scoring.

UMES will try to make it five straight wins for the men’s team and three straight for the women in two weeks at the Hornet Invitational, also in Smyrna, Delaware.
