NORFOLK, Va. – A pair of Norfolk State softball players were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athlete team on Thursday, the organization announced. Senior Alina Moriarty and junior Whitney Williams were NSU’s two honorees on this year’s team.
A pair of two-time All-MEAC infielders, Williams and Moriarty anchor an NSU offense that has hit better than .300 the past two seasons. Moriarty hit .355 last year with nine doubles, five homers and 26 RBI while starting every game at second base. Williams, meanwhile, started every game at third base last year and batted .317 with six doubles, six home runs and 24 RBI while earning first-team All-MEAC honors for the second straight year.
Both players were named to the MEAC All-Academic team last year. Moriarty is also a member of the NSU Honors College.
To be eligible for the NFCA scholar athlete team, student-athletes must have had a 3.5 or better GPA following the 2013-14 academic year.
Among the 13 MEAC schools, only Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M had players listed on the scholar athlete team.
A total of 4,660 softball players across seven membership divisions earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2013-14 academic year, including 1,096 honorees at the Division I level. For the complete list of recipients, visit www.nfca.org.
