KENNER, La. – The Bethune-Cookman bowling team went 3-2 in Baker matches on Friday, placing them sixth after the opening day of the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational at the AMF All Star Lanes.
Playing in the 2014-15 season-opening event, Bethune-Cookman registered a score of 4,570 on the opening day of the three-day tournament hosted by Tulane. The first day’s action featured 5x5 Baker games for each of the 13-team field.
The Wildcats dropped their opening match by a score of 980-877, falling to Jackson State. They immediately bounced back to claim a 905-843 victory over Louisiana Tech in their next matchup.
B-CU took down Southern in its next Baker match, 957-761, followed by a third consecutive win, courtesy a 917-818 decision over No. 18 Alabama State.
The final contest of the day for the Cats was a tough 937-914 setback to fourth-ranked Vanderbilt. The Commodores (4-0) join No. 9 Sam Houston State (5-0) – last year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational champion, as the only undefeated teams after the Baker matches.
Bethune-Cookman returns to the lanes on Saturday in traditional games, with play beginning at 9 a.m. CT. The Cats will roll five traditional games on the day.
In the five-person team game, starting members of the competing teams will successively and, in regular order, bowl one frame on one lane. Once completed, the team members shall move to the alternate lane of the competition pair. This pattern of play continues until all 10 frames of a game are complete. The same substitution rules as Baker will apply.
The tournament concludes Sunday with a tournament at 9 a.m. CT. The tournament, consisting of Best 4-of-7 Baker matches.
