WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Despite having three players score in double figures, the Howard University women's basketball team saw its season-high three-game winning streak snapped by the visiting Cornell Big Red, 70-58, at Burr Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
The loss is also the first home defeat in four games for Howard (6-9, 2-0 MEAC), while Cornell (8-6) has won its last three games.
Redshirt freshman guard tied for the game high with her 21-point tally, her 13th double-digit scoring performance in 15 games this season. Te’Shya Heslip shot 46 percent (6-of-13) from the field, made 8-of-10 free throws and had five assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block.
Sophomore center Victoria Gonzalez, playing for the first time in three games after suffering a leg injury against Wofford, added 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist.
Junior forward Cheyenne Brown tied the career-best she set earlier this season with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.
The Lady Bison opened the game up strong, scoring seven straight points in under a minute after Cornell scored the game's first basket at the 18:15 mark. Heslip, Gonzalez and Brown put up 13 of the team's first 18 points as HU took its largest lead of the game, 18-8, with 12:43 to go in the half.
However, Cornell would turn the momentum in their favor, using an 18-8 run of their own over the next 6:24 to tie the game at 26-26 with 5:34 remaining. Neither team would score for the next 2:20 until Cornell's Shelby Lyman hit a three pointer to give the Big Red a 29-26 with 3:14 to go in the period.
Cornell thwarted Howard's best efforts to regain the lead, as the Big Red would not relinquish their advantage for the rest of the game. HU was outscored 44-32 the rest of the way and trailed by double digits for the last ten and a half minutes of the contest.
Cornell was able to slowly pull away thanks to their 47.3 (26-of-55) field goal percentage; by comparison, Howard only shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the floor.
Freshman forward Nia Marshall had a career day for the Big Red, setting a career high with 21 points in the game.
Howard will finish the season with its final 14 MEAC conference games, starting with its first home doubleheader of the season against Savannah State University on Monday, January 13. The Lady Bison will tip off against the Tigers in Burr Gymnasium at 5:30 pm, followed by the Bison at 7:30 pm.
