MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

Casey Walker of Delaware State was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Lawrence Cooks, of Hampton, earned Rookie of the Week honors, while DSU’s Kendall Gray was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Walker (G/F, 6-5, 185, Sr., Broadnax, Va.) scored a career-high 30 points, hitting 12-of-15 free-throws, in the Hornets’ 70-60 win over Campbell. He also recorded 21 points and eight rebounds, playing 41 minutes, in a 66-65 overtime win over Gardner-Webb.  For the week, Walker averaged 21.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in three non-conference games last week. 

Cooks (G, 6-1, 175, r-Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in an 87-60 win over Radford.  He shot 50-percent from the field (2-of-4) with two assists and one block in the Hampton win. 

Gray (C, 6-10, 230, Jr., Dover, Del.) grabbed 26 rebounds and blocked nine shots in three non-conference games last week.  He hauled down 13 boards against St. Francis (NY) and Campbell.  Offensively, he added 35 total points to help the Hornets finish 2-1 last week.

Other Top Performances

Justin Black (MSU) averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in two non-conference games against Cal-Irvine and Oregon.

Jomari Bradshaw (FAMU) scored 26 points and hauled down nine rebounds, with two assists, in a 93-88 overtime victory against Florida International.

Emanuel Chapman (NCCU) dished out eight assists and stole three passes, along four rebounds and three points, against Maryland.

Ian Chiles (MSU) tallied 29 points, five rebounds, seven blocks and two steals in a pair of non-conference games.

Brandon Goode (NSU) averaged 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 3.0 blocks and 0.5 steals in a pair of non-conference games against Hawai`i and Mount St. Mary’s. 

Matthew Hezekiah (SCSU) averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 block against Coastal Carolina and South Carolina.

Kyree Jones (UMES) finished with 33 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal against Virginia Tech and Mississippi State.

Prince Okoroh (Howard) scored a game-high 27 points with three rebounds and three steals against the College of Charleston.

Deron Powers (Hampton) scored 18 points, 13 in the second half, with six assists, three steals and three rebounds in an 87-60 win over Radford.

Du’Vaughn Maxwell (Hampton) collected 16 points, four rebounds, one assist and one block against Radford.
