NSU Closes Nonconference Play with 79-49 Loss to Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Redshirt junior Rae Corbo scored 15 points but it was not enough as the Norfolk State women’s basketball team suffered a 79-49 loss on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra.

The loss marks the second time this season that the Spartans (5-8) have lost a game by 30 or more points. NSU fell to James Madison, 94-50, on Dec. 30.

Penn finished the game shooting 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and was 25.0 percent (6-of-24) from 3-point range. The Quakers also outscored NSU off turnovers 18-12.

NSU shot 29.2 percent (19-of-65) on the afternoon and was 25.0 percent (2-of-8) from behind the arc. The Spartans also shot 50.0 (9-of-18) from the free throw line. Corbo was the only Spartan to score in double-figures. Jazamine Gray had eight points, two assists and one steal. Rachel Gordon finished with six points and seven rebounds. Gordon’s seven rebounds moved her into sixth all-time in career rebounding at NSU.

The Spartans return to action on Jan. 11 as they resume MEAC play against Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md.

North Carolina Central drops third straight to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – After an explosive start, the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team lost its offensive momentum falling to the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs 68-44, on Sunday, Jan. 5 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.

Redshirt senior Jessica Freeman led the Lady Eagles for the seventh time this season, earning her third 18-point performance of the season, shooting 7-for-16 from the field and 4-for-7 from behind the arc while also leading the team with four steals and three assists.

In addition, junior Racquel Davis added 12 points while pulling down a team-high eight boards, and junior Khyra Conerly and freshman Tia Clement contributed five points apiece.

ODU was led by junior Shae Kelly’s 12 points and 11 boards, while six different Lady Monarchs scored eight or more points.

As a team, NCCU shot 18-for-54 from the field (33.3%), 4-for-10 from three-point land (40.0%) and 4-for-8 from the charity stripe (50.0%) while pulling down 32 rebounds, collecting 10 assists and eight steals.

The Lady Eagles wrap up non-conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 7 as NCCU battles the Winthrop Eagles in a 7 p.m. matchup in Rockhill, S.C.
