Lady Pirates run away from SCSU, extend streaks
ORANGEGBURG, S.C. – With a 78-47 win over South Carolina State Monday evening at the Smith- Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, the Hampton University women’s basketball team extended a few streaks.
First, the Lady Pirates (16-4, 7-0 MEAC) won their sixth straight game.
Hampton also won its 37th straight game against a MEAC foe – a streak dating back to the 2011-12 season.
The Lady Pirates have also won 23 straight on the road in conference play.
Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas was a big reason for that, leading all scorers with 27 points on 9-for-17 shooting to record her eighth 20-point effort of the season. Senior forward Alyssa Bennett added 17 points – all in the second half – and eight rebounds.
Senior guard Nicole Hamilton added 10 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and five blocks. She is now six points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62) from the floor and hit seven of their 23 3-pointers (30.4 percent). Hampton also had one of its best performances at the free throw line this season, going 13-for-16 (81.3 percent).
Hampton also out-rebounded SCSU 45-31 and turned 15 Lady Bulldog turnovers into 12 points.
The Lady Pirates also held a 24-11 edge in second-chance points.
SCSU (5-12, 3-4 MEAC) shot just 31.6 percent (18-for-57) from the floor and went 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) from behind the arc. The Lady Bulldogs only made eight trips to the free throw line, converting six times.
Dayshaun Richbow led the Lady Bulldogs with nine points.
The Lady Pirates will be in Baltimore, Md. on Saturday, where they will take on Coppin State at 2 p.m.

Savannah State hand Norfolk State first road MEAC loss
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State claimed a 79-47 victory over the Norfolk State women’s basketball team on Monday afternoon at Tiger Arena. The loss marks NSU’s first loss on the road in MEAC play this season.
NSU (9-10, 5-3) shot only 25.0 percent (12-of-48) from the field overall and was 74.2 percent (23-of-31) from the free throw line. Freshman Dominique Harper was the only Spartan to score in double-figures, leading NSU with a season-high 15 points. Junior Rae Corbo had only eight points, ending her double-figure scoring streak at six games. Senior Rachel Gordon finished with six points and five rebounds to end her double-double streak at five games.
The Lady Tigers outscored NSU in the paint 30-16 and outrebounded NSU 45-28.
Also scoring in double figures for Savannah State were Kenyatta Hendrix and Bria Dorsey, who scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Tigers shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the field and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free throw line.
NSU has the week off and will return to action on Feb. 8 at Morgan State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Talmadge Hill Field House in Baltimore, Md.

Total Team Effort by DSU Too Much to Handle for Wesley in Victory
DOVER, Del. – Despite playing without its leading scorer (20.7 ppg) and rebounder (10.2 rpg), forward Tierra Hawkins (shoulder), the Delaware State women’s basketball team (5-13, 0-6 MEAC) ousted crosstown foe Wesley (4-13, 1-7 CAC) at home, 79-37, behind four Lady Hornets players tallying double figures in the scoring column.
With this win, the Lady Hornets snapped a four-game skid, while the Wolverines concluded their four-game road swing at 1-3.
Deanna Harmon recorded 19 points (5-of-9) and pulled down career-high 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, to go along with a game-high five steals. Raven Bankston led all scorers 28 points (13-of-21), which tied a career-high, while starter Mi’Queara Lewis tallied career-highs in points (10) and rebounds (9) for DSU down low. Off the bench, Tylinn Carter scored a career-high 13 points (5-of-8) and tied a career-high in rebounds (9) despite playing just 13 minutes, in what was first game back after missing the previous two.
Washington not only set a career-high with 12 assists, but it also matched a team single-game record.
Delaware State shot 47 percent (30-of-64) with 42 points coming off 32 Wesley turnovers. In addition to the Lady Hornets’ strong defensive effort, Wesley’s 37 points and 14 made field goals were season-lows for Delaware State.
DSU will hop back into conference action when it travels to Baltimore, Md. to face the Morgan State Bears on Saturday (2 p.m.), followed by Coppin State on Monday (5:30 p.m.).

Bethune-Cookman Falls on Last-Second Howard Rally
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (6-14, 3-5 MEAC) faced a tough defensive struggle in Monday night’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium against the Howard Lady Bison (8-11, 4-2 MEAC). Although B-CU led the majority of the contest, turnovers proved costly in the closing moments, surrendering the lead with just 15 seconds remaining in the 47-45 loss.
Center Kailyn Williams put up eight points with eight rebounds. Her four blocks forced the Lady Bison to alter game plans, which allowed B-CU to gain leads. Howard shot just 28.4 percent from the field.
The Lady Wildcats turned the ball over 20 times against the Lady Bison, with HU tallying 16 points off turnovers, including 13 in the second half.

Davis pushes NCCU to last second win over Morgan State
DURHAM, N.C. – With the hoop and harm by junior Racquel Davis at the six second mark, the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team (8-11, 3-3 MEAC) pulled off the 50-48 victory over the Morgan State Lady Bears (2-17, 0-6 MEAC), as the Lady Eagles finished 2-2 during their four-game road stand on Monday, Jan. 27 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
Down by one with 25 seconds left in the game, junior Khyra Conerly dished to Davis on the block. After missing her first shot attempt as the clocked ticked, Davis collected her own offensive rebound and fired a second shot, counting the basket, and earning a foul from MSU’s Britashia Burns.
The made bucket put the Lady Eagles back up by one and Davis’ fourth made shot from the foul line sealed the two-point lead for NCCU with six seconds left on the game clock.
Davis earned her eighth double-double of the season with a team second-best 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 shooting from the charity stripe while pulling down a game-best 11 boards and also collecting three steals.
Senior Jessica Freeman scored a game-high 20 points during the Lady Eagle victory, pulled down an additional seven boards, dished two helpers and grasped two steals while Conerly added 10 NCCU points.
Tracey Carrington led MSU with 18 points while Dinah Jones pulled down a Lady Bears best seven rebounds.
As a team, NCCU shot 16-for-47 from the field (34.0%), 1-for-6 from behind the arc (16.7%) and 17-for-26 from the free throw line (65.4%) while pulling down 40 boards, dishing nine assists, and collecting two blocks and seven steals.
The Lady Eagles hit the road for a weekend Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series at Howard in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Feb. 1 and at Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md., on Feb. 3.
