AALBORG, Denmark - Former University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball star, Hillary Haley, has recently signed a contract to play professional basketball for the Aalborg Vikings of the Danish Basketligaen. Haley is the second UMES player to sign a professional contract in the past year as Tyler Hines recently inked a deal in Greece.
Aalborg is 7-9 so far this season and stand in seventh place in the DBL. The Vikings are among one of the better scoring teams in the league and have four players averaging double-digit point totals. Haley's signing gives the Vikings their second American-born player on the roster, with the other being Oregon State alum, Joe Burton, who is averaging 20.3 ppg and 11.9 rpg. Haley will look to anchor the four-spot in the lineup and will give the team much needed experience in the low post.
Haley, 25, comes to the Vikings from the Rochester (N.Y.) RazorSharks of the Premier Basketball League (PBL) in 2013. He played eight games with the RazorSharks in which he averaged 12.8 ppg and 9.4 rpg. Before Rochester, Haley played with the Halifax Rainmen of Canadian National Basketball League (CNBL), where he played 36 games and had 9.5 ppg last year.
The Fort Washington, Md., product averaged 11.5 ppg and 4.3 rpg in his three years as a Hawk. His best season was his junior year, where averaged 16.8 ppg and 5.1 rpg. He padded his stat line with a 41-percent clip from the floor that year. Haley was named to the All-MEAC Second Team in 2011 and the All-MEAC Tournament team in 2010. He transferred to UMES from St. Bonaventure in 2008.
