MEAC Announces Women?s Basketball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., January 20, 2014 – Hampton guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Bethune-Cookman’s Kailyn Williams was selected the Rookie of the Week, while Norfolk State’s Rachel Gordon earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Tate-DeFreitas (G, 5-8, Fr., Harrisburg, Pa.) poured in 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 80-52 victory against Coppin State. Tate-DeFreitas shot 47 percent (8-of-17) from the field and sank four 3-pointers. She also added five assists and three steals.

Williams (C, 6-5, r-Fr., New Orleans, La.) averaged 11.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in conference games against North Carolina Central and Savannah State. Williams finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in a 67-52 win against NCCU. She shot 69 percent (9-for-13) from the floor and added nine points, and 11 rebounds in a loss to Savannah State.

Gordon (F, 6-0, Sr., Woodbridge, Va.) totaled 29 rebounds in a pair of wins against Delaware State and Morgan State. Gordon registered 16 rebounds in a 61-52 win against Morgan State. She also totaled 31 points, three assists and two steals.

Other Top Performers: 

Tracey Carrington (MSU) recorded 22 points, four steals and three rebounds in a loss to Norfolk State.

Larissa Carter (CSU) registered 18 points, 11 rebounds, and one assist against Hampton.

Shakeyia Colyer (BCU) finished with 22 points, seven assists and three steals in a 67-52 win against North Carolina Central.

Rae Corbo (NSU) poured in 16 points and dished out a pair of assists in a 61-52 win against Morgan State.

Tiyonda Davis (SSU) dropped in 10 points and nine rebounds in a 65-49 victory against Howard.

Tisha Dixon (NCCU) grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds and added seven points in a 75-61 win against Delaware State.

Jessica Freeman (NCCU) poured in 21 points, on 8-of-13 shooting, in a 75-61 win against Delaware State.

Jasmine Grice (FAMU) recorded 24 points and a career-high eight steals in a 55-51 win against North Carolina A&T.

Victoria Gonzalez (Howard) dropped in 15 points and grabbed 11 boards in loss to Savannah State.

Tierra Hawkins (DSU) averaged 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in games against Norfolk State and North Carolina Central.

Nicole Hamilton (Hampton) registered 18 points, six rebounds, six assists, five blocks and a pair of steals in a 80-52 win against Coppin State.

Te’Shya Heslip (Howard) finished with 18 points, including the game-winning basket in an overtime win against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Ezinne Kalu (SSU) averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists in conference games against Howard and Bethune-Cookman.

Jessica Long (UMES) finished with 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds in an overtime loss against Howard.

Logan Powell (NSU) registered 10 points and seven rebounds in a 61-52 victory against Morgan State.

Danielle Robinson (MSU) recorded 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds in a loss to Norfolk State.

Taneka Rubin (FAMU) poured in 15 points in a 55-51 victory against North Carolina A&T.

Debbie Smith (NCAT) dropped in 16 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 55-51 loss against Florida A&M.

Kourtney Williams (SCSU) totaled 46 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four assists in games against Coppin State and Florida A&M.
