Norfolk State Falls to Old Dominion in Season Opener

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women’s tennis team opened the season with a 7-0 loss to Old Dominion on Saturday night at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

NSU opened play in the doubles competition. Sophomore Andrea Macchiavello and junior Mafalda Lhorca paired up at the No. 1 position, where they fell to Nikol Hristova and Ingrid Vojcinakova, 6-1. Freshman Ana Popovic and junior Yvonne Kamegne competed in the No. 3 slot and suffered a 6-3 loss to Faith Atiso and Ivana Vukovic. Junior Krystal Scott and freshman Liza Gordeeva were up 5-3 against Melissa Esnal-Olguin and Nika Khomolovska, but the match was stopped when the Monarch’s clinched the doubles point.

The Spartans continued to struggle in singles play. Hristova defeated Gordeeva 6-1, 6-0. Macchiavello suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Vojcinakova. Kamegne competed at the No. 3 slot where she fell to Khomolovska. Vukovic upended Lhorca 6-4, 6-1. Scott competed against Esnal-Olguin at the No. 4 position and lost 6-0, 6-0. Newcomer Marie Habiyaremye closed things out for the Spartans with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Atiso.

NSU returns to action on Jan. 31 against Hampton at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va.
