Eagles Soar Past Hornets Saturday Afternoon, 75-61

DURHAM, N.C. –
The Delaware State women’s basketball team (4-12, 0-5 MEAC) faced uphill climb Saturday afternoon on the road in search of its conference win of the season as the North Carolina Central Eagles (7-9, 2-1 MEAC)  managed to pull out a 75-61 victory.

Three NCCU players scored in double figures, spearheaded by Jessica Freeman’s 21-point (8-of-13) effort, including a 5-for-9 (.555) output from long distance.  Guard Khyra Conerly recorded a double-double with 15 points (7-of-11) and 10 rebounds, along with a team-high five assists, whereas Jones added 10 points (4-of-6) off the bench.

As a team, the Eagles shot 52 percent (32-of-58), including draining 15 three pointers, totaling 25 points off the bench and recording 38 points in the paint.

Delaware State finished the game shooting 40 percent (26-of-65) with Tierra Hawkins tallying a game-high 26 points (12-of-17) and a team-high eight rebounds.  Coming off the bench for the second consecutive game, guard Raven Bankston chipped in with 13 points (5-of-18), whereas starter Jade Washington recorded a game-high six assists and three steals, to go along with eight points (4-of-5).

Collectively, the Lady Hornets managed just 11 turnovers, compared to 17 by NCCU, but lost the battle on the boards (40-29).

Coming up, the Lady Hornets will stay in North Carolina to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Monday (4 p.m.).

Lady Hawks fall in overtime to Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After a strong first half, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team was unable to sustain the momentum as they fell to the Lady Bison of Howard University in overtime, 77-75.

With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-12 overall (0-4 MEAC) whereas Howard improves to 7-10 (3-1 MEAC) on the season. These two institutions will meet next month (02/15) inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Game-time is set for 2:00 p.m.

Jessica Long paced the Hawk attack, scoring a game-high 21 points, including 9-for-11 from the free- throw line. Ashleigh Claybrooks recorded a double-double off the bench, 14 points and 14 boards, in the loss.

Other notable Hawk performances included Shawnee Sweeney notching 10 points, including three long balls, while Chalyse Taylor added eight points in a losing effort.

For Howard, Shavonne Duckett tallied a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, whereas Te’Shya Heslip registered 18 points, nine boards, and eight assists in the victory.

Next Saturday (01/25), the Lady Hawks head south to Daytona Beach, Fla. where the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University awaits. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Late-Game Turnovers Dash Bethune-Cookman Comeback at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Although the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (4-13, 1-4 MEAC) came storming back late in the second half against Savannah State (10-8, 3-1 MEAC), a pair of costly turnovers with under a minute to play resulted in six points for the Lady Tigers, paving the way for the 58-54 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss, Saturday night at Tiger Arena.

Chastity Rene Taylor led all B-CU scorers with 14 points, while Kendra Cooper was 3-for-4 from the perimeter and collected a career high of 11. Shakeyia Colyer and Taylor Houston each added 10 points apiece for only B-CU’s second game with four players in double figures. Williams cut close to another double double, scoring nine with 11 rebounds.

For Savannah State, Ezinne Kalu led the way with 17 points on 6-for-15 shooting.

The Lady Wildcats remain on the road this weekend, as they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to face South Carolina State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Rae Corbo Scores 16 Points as NSU Tops Morgan State 61-52

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Rae Corbo tallied 16 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line to help Norfolk State claim a 61-52 victory over Morgan State Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall. This was the Spartans’ third straight win and fourth straight conference win.

The win gives NSU (8-8, 4-1) its best start in MEAC play since the 2001-2002 season where the Spartans also started 4-1 in conference play.

Rachel Gordon’s 14 points and 16 rebounds in the game helped her earn her third consecutive double-double. She now has eight double-doubles on the season. Freshman Logan Powell also scored in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. She also had one steal.

NSU only shot 25.5 percent (13-of-51) from the field for the game and was only 2-of-7 from 3-point range. Basey and Ebony Brown also contributed to the Spartans’ scoring effort. Kieera Basey tied her career-high of eight points. She also had a team-high three assists. Brown had nine points, and shot 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free throw line.

The Spartans out-rebounded Morgan State 48-38 and held the Lady Bears to 27.4 percent (17-of-62) shooting on the afternoon. Tracey Carrington led Morgan State in scoring with 22 points. Danielle Robinson also finished with double figures for the Lady Bears with 12 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

The Spartans return to the court on Monday to take on Coppin State. Game time is at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.

Lady Pirates upend Coppin State, remain unbeaten in MEAC

HAMPTON, Va. – Four players scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon as the Hampton University women’s basketball team upended Coppin State 80-52 at the HU Convocation Center to remain undefeated in conference play.

The Lady Pirates (13-4, 4-0 MEAC) have won their last 34 games against MEAC foes, including the conference tournament, dating back to the 2011-12 season. Hampton has also won its last five games against Coppin State.

Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the way with 24 points – her sixth 20-point effort of the season – while tying for the team lead with seven rebounds. Senior forward Alyssa Bennett and senior guard Nicole Hamilton each added 18 points.

Bennett also had seven rebounds, while Hamilton – who tied her career high with five 3-pointers – added six rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and two steals.

Junior guard Kenia Cole came off the bench to add 10 points, and redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed seven rebounds.

The Lady Pirates shot 46.0 percent (29-for-63) from the floor and went 12-for-28 (42.9 percent) from behind the arc. Hampton also held a 50-41 edge on the glass, and the Lady Pirates turned 16 Coppin State turnovers into 15 points.

Coppin State (6-10, 3-1 MEAC) shot just 31.3 percent (21-for-67) from the floor and went just 1-for-5 from behind the arc. Larrisa Carter led the Lady Eagles with 18 points.

The Lady Pirates will return to the HU Convocation Center on Monday to square off against Morgan State at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.

Williams paces South Carolina State past Florida A&M

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Junior guard Kourtney Williams tossed in a career-high 30 points and two other South Carolina State players also reached double figures as the Lady Bulldogs defeated visiting Florida A&M 68-57 Saturday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest.

Graduate guards Dayshaun Richbow and Cabriel Duren added 19 and 17 points, respectively, in the victory which lifted Coach Doug Robertson’s team to 5-9 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. Williams and Richbow each had five rebounds to lead SC State on the boards, where the Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a 38-33 advantage.

SC State connected on 49 (23-48) percent of its shots from the field but was off on 12 of its 31 attempts from the foul line and made just three of 10 tries from three-point range.

Florida A&M made hit just 17 of 53 tries from the floor, a 32.1 percent accuracy, was 17 of 21 (81 percent) from the charity stripe and nailed 6 of 22 shots (27.3 percent) from behind the arc.

Taneka Rubin had 17 points and FAMU leading scorer Jasmine Grice 16 – six under her average -- to pace the visitors, who fell to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the league. Tierra Prothro added 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Lady Rattlers.

The Lady Bulldogs return to the court Monday when they host Bethune-Cookman in another league doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
