Florida A&M uses strong second half to beat North Carolina A&T
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (7-9) used a strong offensive performance in the second half to defeat the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T, 55-51, on Monday night at the Al Lawson Center on the campus of Florida A&M University.
The tale of the second half was free throws and tenacity as the Lady Rattlers clawed their way back into the game after being down by as many as eight points in the second half. The Lady Rattlers converted 15-of-17 from the free throw line, an 88.2 percent clip, while the Aggies went only 9-of-19 in the same period.
Jasmine Grice led the Lady Rattlers in scoring with 24 points on 7-for-20 shooting, including 3-of-6 from the three-point line. Taneka Rubin would be the only other Lady Rattler in double figures, as she scored 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Tierra Prothro and Ann Marie Harris each grabbed five rebounds to lead the way for FAMU.
Debbie Smith paced the Lady Aggies with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. Ariel Bursey chipped in eight points, shooting 3-of-6 from the field and 1-of-2 from the three-point line. Eboni Ross pulled down a game high seven rebounds. The Aggies were not very protective of the ball, making 26 turnovers in the game, including two crucial ones down the stretch.

Spartans Move to 3-1 in MEAC Play with 57-48 Win Over Delaware State
DOVER, Del. – Senior forward Rachel Gordon posted 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Norfolk State to a 57-48 victory over Delaware State on Monday night at Memorial Hall. The Spartans are now 3-1 in conference play and 7-8 on the season.
Redshirt junior Rae Corbo also scored in double figures, adding 12 points and three assists for NSU. Freshman Logan Powell tallied eight points and five rebounds, while juniors Ebony Brown and Quineshia Leonard totaled seven and six points, respectively. Both Brown and Leonard each pulled down six boards. Rounding out the scoring effort for the Spartans were freshmen Kieera Basey, who had four points, and Dominique Harper, who finished the night with three points.
For the game, NSU shot 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the floor and shot 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the free throw line. The Spartans also outrebounded DSU, 43-39, including a 29-23 advantage in defensive rebounds.
NSU returns home to face Morgan State on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. in Joseph Echols Hall.

Second-Half Bethune-Cookman Run Secures Conference Victory Over North Carolina Central
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats snapped a five-game losing streak and remained perfect against the North Carolina Central on Monday night at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium, using a multi-faceted attack to down the Lady Eagles, 67-52.
Shakeyia Colyer put up 22 points on 67 percent shooting, in addition to tallying a season-high seven assists with three steals. Over the past three games, the Sanford, Fla. native has been on an offensive tear, scoring 62 points.
With the win, Bethune-Cookman moved to 9-0 all-time against North Carolina Central.
Next up is a pair of MEAC road contests in the region, traveling to Georgia for a Jan. 18 matchup with Savannah State, followed by a Jan. 20 meeting with South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C.

Lane’s double-double lifts Coppin State past South Carolina State
BALTIMORE – Janelle Lane picked the perfect time to turn in a performance to remember for the Coppin State University women’s basketball team.
Her first career double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds helped Coppin State defeat South Carolina State, 62-49, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s basketball contest at the Physical Education Complex Monday night.
Both marks were career bests for Lane, who helped Coppin State win its second straight game and raise its overall mark to 6-9 and conference record to a perfect 3-0.
Senior Larrisa Carter notched her fifth double-double of the season and her 15th of her magnificent career by finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior forward Kyra Coleman had another active night with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in 36 minutes. She passed Jackie Stewart and into 10th place on the all-time Coppin State scoring list with her first basket of the game, a 3-pointer before fans could get comfortable. Coleman now has scored 1,041 career points. Next in Coleman’s sights is former teammate Leola Spotwood, who has 1,045 points, for ninth place.
Carter, Lane and Coleman combined for 28 rebounds, four more than the entire South Carolina State team. Overall, Coppin State won the rebounding battle, 47-24.
Kourtney Williams led South Carolina State with 16 points and six rebounds. DayShaun Richbow added 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs (4-9, 2-1).
Coppin State begins a four-game conference road trip Saturday afternoon at Hampton University. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
