North Carolina A&T Deals Bethune-Cookman MEAC Loss with Big-Scoring Second Half

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats fell to 0-3 in conference play on Saturday afternoon, as Bethune-Cookman (3-12, 0-3 MEAC) played host to one of the conference’s top teams in North Carolina A&T (11-2, 1-0 MEAC) at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium. Despite a close first half, the Aggies pulled away in the second period on tough inside scoring.

Despite matching the Aggies effort in scoring off the turnover, with both teams notching 19, NCAT capitalized for the fast break at a much higher rate, collecting 12 points to B-CU’s two. Chastity Rene Taylor displayed offensive balance in each half, leading the team with 20 points on 50 percent shooting. Point guard Shakeyia Colyer proved to be a force as well, putting up a strong all-around performance in the first half to keep B-CU in striking position. Colyer finished with 14 points, five steals and three assists, tying Jasmine Evans for a game-high six rebounds.

Tayong paces Coppin State past Savannah State

BALTIMORE --- Coppin State University sophomore center Omaah Tayong made her first college start memorable by recording a double-double of 10 points and a career-high 23 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 68-53 victory over Savannah State University in a women’s basketball Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest Saturday afternoon.

Also reaching double figures for Coppin State was senior point guard Ashle Craig (18 points) and sophomore guard Amber Griffin (11 points).

Coppin State (5-9 overall, 2-0 MEAC) never trailed in beating Savannah State (8-8, 1-1) for the third straight time. Playing without its second leading scorer and senior leader Larrisa Carter, the Eagles
limited Savannah State to 30 percent shooting and won the rebounding battle, 50-37.

Tayong’s rebounding performance was one of the best in school history. The 23 rebounds are the third most in a single game in CSU women’s basketball history. It’s the first time a CSU player has reached at
least 23 rebounds since Whitney Cunningham grabbed 24 rebounds against Morgan State on Jan. 3, 2009. The school record of 28 rebounds was set by Yvette Larkins against Baptist in 1989. In addition, the 23 rebounds in a single game is tied for the second most by a MEAC player this year.

Jasmine Kirkland (23 points) and Ezinne Kalu (11) were Savannah State’s leading scorers. Tiyonda Davis, Kirkland and Shawanda Hanton had seven rebounds each for the Lady Tigers.

Coppin State returns to action Monday night when it hosts South Carolina State starting at 5:30 p.m.
