Coppin State drops pair of matches at Patriot Invitational
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Ariel Richard had a combined 30 kills, but Coppin State lost to Princeton and Temple on the final day of play in the Patriot Invitational on Saturday at George Mason.
Coppin State (1-6) lost to Princeton 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 in its first match of the day and then concluded the tournament with a 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 loss to Temple.
Richard led the Eagles with 13 kills against Princeton and then added a season-high 17 kills against Temple. The junior also had a .310 hitting percentage against Princeton and a season-best .412 hitting percentage versus Temple.
Cindy Okpegbue added eight kills against Princeton, while Denali Sturgeon had seven kills. Gabrielle Otero had a season-high 29 digs for the Eagles.
Kendall Peterkin had 13 kills to lead Princeton, while Ellie Shannon had nine kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Okpegbue added 14 kills against Temple, while Kandace Thomas had five kills and six blocks. Otero had 20 digs, which marked the fourth consecutive match in which she has had at least 20 digs.
Chelsee Sauni tied her season high with 42 assists and she also had 10 digs, while freshman Morgan Haynes had 14 digs.
The Eagles had 11 blocks and 71 digs against Temple, but the Owls prevailed on the strength of a .244 hitting percentage, 11 blocks and 62 digs.
Emily Carlin had 19 kills and 15 digs to lead Temple, while Caroline Grattan had 17 kills and Gabriella Matautia had 14 kills and 11 digs.

Stephens and Brochu named to All-Tournament Team as SSU drops pair to close out tourney
DELAND, Fla. – Savannah State volleyball closed out the Stetson University Tournament with losses to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Bethune-Cookman and host Stetson University.
Senior Bridgette Stephens and sophomore Bianca Brochu were named to the All-Tournament team. Stephens recorded 20 digs for the Lady Tigers in the four-game tournament, while Brochu had 13 kills overall.
In the closing game of the tournament, SSU was routed by host Stetson, falling in straight sets, 3-0.
Brochu led the Lady Tigers with six kills, five digs and one block. Washington led in digs with eight. Kaley Melville and Prewitt led Stetson with nine kills apiece. Alexa Drost led a well-balanced defensive effort with seven digs for the Lady Hatters.

UMES’ Jerabkova comes up short in triple-double attempt
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Newcomer Petra Jerabkova made her Hawk debut for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in the teams’ first match of the Sacred Heart University Invitational, taking on the Jaspers of Manhattan. While the Hawks fell 3-1, Jerabkova made an impression, coming up a dig shy of a triple double, posting 15 kills, 21 assists and nine digs.
Jingqiao Li picked up where she left off last weekend, again dominating defensively for the Hawks, picking up 28 digs. The net defense also had their best outing of the young season, out-blocking Manhattan, tallying 6.5 blocks and 13 block assists. Haley Robinson recorded four of those herself while adding six kills.
Jerabkova dished out 12 assists and dug 12 balls while adding six kills and four blocks as it wasn't enough however, as the Hawks fell 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19) to the host Pioneers of Sacred Heart University (SHU) in a close fought match.
Li showed her senior leadership once again, digging 21 balls while Haley Robinson helped Jerabkova at the net, notching six block assists. She would pitch in with a pair of digs, five kills and two service aces.
Ashley Smith added four kills and was complemented up front by Moriah Brookins who killed six balls and blocked five more.
Freshman Sonia Rosales dished out a dozen more assists to match Jerabkova and added a pair of digs. Allison Woods saw action on all four sets and rewarded Coach Van Norden's decision with 11 digs and four block assists to go along with a pair of kills. Lauren Berry also chipped in with three blocks and three kills.

Prescott finishes with nine kills as Morgan State falls to East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Nicole Wills notched a double-double with a match-high 12 kills and 10 digs to lead host East Carolina to a 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 26-24) sweep of Morgan State on Day 2 of the East Carolina Classic at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates (2-3), who are on a two-match winning streak, also got a 20-dig performance from Shelby Beasley and 27 assists out of Zarah Cecich in the win. The victory gives East Carolina a 4-2 all-time advantage over the Lady Bears.
Morgan State (0-5) was led by Samantha Prescott’s nine kills and 10 digs. Tamara Leslie tallied a team-high 19 digs, while Ngebui Chafeh finished with 27 assists.

Simon and Armstrong pace Lady Wildcats past Lady Tigers
DELAND, Fla. - -Rhea Simon and Phylecia Armstrong each posted career-highs with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, as Bethune-Cookman posted its first win of the season with a 3-0 (25-16,25-14,25-13) victory over Savannah State at the Stetson Westin Classic.
The Lady Cats (1-4) literally cut their attack error total in half from 28 Friday against Stetson and .280 as a team for the straight-set victory.
Simon, a sophomore, also seven digs and three blocks while Armstrong, also a sophomore, hit .600.

Brown leads Eagles in loss against Indiana State
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – North Carolina Central University volleyball junior Da'sha Brown lead the Eagles as they wrapped up the 2013 Campbell Hampton Inn of Holly Spring Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Indiana State (25-11, 25-19, 25-21).
Brown finished the match with a team-high ten kills on thirty attempts while junior Alice Genna assisted the offense with 15 assists.
On the defensive end Alialena Thompson earned four blocks while Marilyn Sherbondy dug a team-high nine digs for NCCU.
As a team the Eagles collected 21 kills, 36 digs, 21 assists and six team blocks.

North Carolina A&T suffers setbacks against UNC Greensboro and Murray State
GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T State suffered a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-14) setback to the hands of crosstown rival UNC Greensboro and concluded play at the Aggie-Spartan Invitational presented by Ashford Suites in Moore Gymnasium with a 3-0 loss to Murray State.
Against UNC Greensboro, Brooke Stamnes finished with a match-high 12 kills in route to her second consecutive match in double-digit kills. Te’Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth and Aleena McDaniel each added six kills for the Aggies.
In the loss to Murray State, McDaniel finished with a team-leading 15 kills and Te’Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworh added three blocks.

Moore Sets Assist Record on Day 2 at West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A late comeback allowed the Norfolk State volleyball team to earn a split on the second day of the Mountaineer Invitational. NSU rallied late to top Canisius, 3-2, before succumbing to Fordham later in the day, 3-0.
NSU's offense woke up against Canisius in a morning match at the WVU Coliseum, and sophomore Darcy Moore was a big catalyst in NSU's play. She tallied 56 assists against the Golden Griffins, setting the school record in the process. Moore finished with one more assist than Afreya Allen, who had 55 against Howard on Oct. 17, 2003.
Sophomore Jessica Johnson had 19 kills and hit .260 to lead the Spartan offense against Canisius, while senior Goda Jankauskaite finished with 16 kills. Moore also completed the double-double with 19 digs, while redshirt junior Noelle Eagles led all players with 23.
Fordham was all over NSU in the first set of their match later in the afternoon, winning 25-6 before completing the sweep with 25-15, 25-19 victories in the next two sets.
Against Fordham Tori Tulensru and Jankauskaite led NSU with eight and seven kills, respectively, against the Rams.

Lewis named to All-Tournament Team as Lady Bulldogs drop pair
CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina State went 0-2 on day two of the Hampton Inn/College of Charleston Invitational.
In their first match of the day, SC State fell to host College of Charleston, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-15). Desire Waller had eight kills and Erica Pritchett put down five kills in the match. Freshman Victoria Ferguson picked up a game-high 12 digs while sophomore Melanie Williams put up 14 set assists in the loss.
Despite falling 3-0 in the second match of the day, SC State displayed a lot of hustle and tenacity throughout. There were a total of 12 ties and six lead changes over the three sets, as the Lady Bulldogs fell to Coastal Carolina, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22, in their final match of the tournament.
Senior Alyse Lewis, who earned all-tournament honors, had five kills with four blocks and a hitting percentage of .571 in the match. Senior Desire Waller had 10 kills and sophomore setter Melanie Williams had 19 set assists for SC State.
Lady Pirates split pair at Boston College Invitational
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Hampton split a pair of matches at the Boston College Invitational at the Power Gym, falling to Fairfield in straight sets before beating Bryant in four.
The Lady Pirates (4-1) beat Bryant 3-1 (25-15, 27-29, 25-22, 25-18) after falling to Fairfield 3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 26-24).
Junior Vendula Strakova recorded a combined 36 kills over the two matches, and she recorded her second-double-double of the season against Bryant with a team-high 20 kills and 11 digs.
She also had three service aces in that match.
Junior Krista Kraskura added 19 kills against Bryant, recording just four errors to hit .469 for the match.
