Cross Country Recap: September 7

UMES men place second and women claim third

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore cross country teams opened up their 2013 campaign on Saturday afternoon as the Hawks saw each squad earn top-3 finishes at the UMES Lid-Lifter.

The men highlighted action with a second-place finish amongst five teams, while the women concluded the day with a third-place finish. The men's team saw two freshman, Khalil Rmidi Kinini and Derrick Cheruiyot each earn a top-10 placing.

The men's 5k race was dominated by Norfolk State (17 points), which saw all five of its runners cross the finish line within the first seven. Rmidi Kinini was the first to finish for the men after he concluded the race with an eighth-place time of 16:42.07, before Cheruiyot came around nine seconds later at 16:51.06 to place tenth.

It was the performance of UMES' next three runners that would make the difference for the Hawks.  Freshman Nassar Whitehead placed 12th in 17:11.02, while seniors Paul Jerry was 13th in 17:14.03 and Codjo Gbedo finished 14th with a time of 17:22.07. The trio outdueled the last runner for Morgan State to help the Hawks claim second-place by 10 points over the Bears.

The women's team saw Morgan State (28 points) and Norfolk State (31 points) finish first and second in the team results, before the Lady Hawks took third at the 5k race with 87 points. Sophomore Rachel Halmon was the first to cross the finish line for UMES when she ran a 20:39.29 to finish in 12th. Sophomore Shantol Hemley placed 16th with a time of 22:05.47 and Margret Wilmont-Francis was 17th in 22:06.36. Sophomore Jheniel Kelly  rounded out the top-5 for UMES with an 18th place time of 22:06.86.

Norfolk State's David Kibet won a foot race at the finish to win the men's race with a time of 15:46.02 and Morgan State's Ashley Seymour was the top women's harrier in 18:42.55.

Seymour and Swain carry Morgan State to UMES Lid-Lifter Title

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Ashley Seymour and Ishakeema Swain placed first and second, respectively, to lead Morgan State to a first-place finish at the UMES Lid Lifter Meet on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The Lady Bears finished with a total of 28 points.

Seymour, who captured the individual title, finished in a time of 18:42.55, while Swain came in second in a time of 19:12.91.

In all, the Lady Bears had seven runners finish within the top 15, including Kali Kendall (6th-19:45.98), Danielle Calhoun (11th-20:38.80), Nynneya Columbus (13th-21:04.83), Tere Cooley (14th-21:17.60) and Kiara Jelks (15th-21:31.78).

North Carolina Central Women defeat North Carolina A&T
DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s cross country squad, led by junior Amber Brooks, captured a team victory over the visiting Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University on Sept. 7 in Durham, N.C.
 
Brooks, who finished in first place, completed the 5k course in 22 minutes and 44 seconds as the Lady Eagles hosted the fourth annual Eagle-Aggie Cross Country Classic at the Al Buehler Cross Country Trail, located on the campus of Duke University.
 
NCCU junior Regina Summerville completed the race in fourth place with a time of 25:40, followed by senior Delesha Conquest (26:23, fifth), junior Syrita Hunt (26:37, sixth), and senior Sararesa Hudson (28:39, ninth).
 
On the men’s side, the Eagles were led by freshmen runners Gregory Coward, Deandre James, and Victor Dunbar, who finished the 6k course fourth (21:32), fifth (22:51), and eighth place (24:18), respectively.
 
In addition, sophomore Kevin Vincent finished with a time of 25:22 (12th) followed by freshman Carlton Edwards (27:07, 13th) and sophomore Brett Boykin-Roach (27:07, 14th).
