Hampton serving notice in NCAA Rankings

HAMPTON, Va. – With the 2013 season a month old and conference play starting, the Hampton University volleyball team is still ranked among the top of the NCAA in several categories, based on the updated statistics made available on Monday.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova, a three-time MEAC Player of the Week, leads the nation in both points and kills this season, and she also ranks 11th in all of Div. I in service aces. Strakova, who has 10 double-doubles this season, is averaging 6.67 points and 5.73 kills per set.

She is also averaging 0.54 aces per set. Strakova also leads the MEAC in all three categories.

Junior middle blocker Marija Kocevska is 35th in the nation in service aces, averaging 0.44 per set. She had a team-high three aces in Sunday’s straight-set win over Morgan State.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca, who has eclipsed the 1,500-assist mark during her career at Hampton, currently ranks 72nd in the nation in assists, averaging a MEAC-best 10.34 per set. She has had at least 50 assists four times this season, including 50 at Norfolk State this past Friday.

So far as a Lady Pirate, Fonseca has totaled 1,564 career assists.

As a team, the Lady Pirates (8-7, 2-0 MEAC), winners of three straight, are 13th in the nation in aces, averaging a conference-best 1.80 per set. Hampton is also 92nd in the nation in kills (13.36 per set) and 93rd in hitting percentage (.230).

The Lady Pirates lead the nation in both categories.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, when they close out non-conference play at Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
