HAMPTON, Va. – The already-gaudy numbers for Hampton University junior rightside Vendula Strakova keep getting better; in the latest NCAA statistical rankings, released on Monday, she ranks in the top two in two offensive categories.
Strakova, a two-time MEAC Player of the Week and this season’s first Division I National Player of the Week as named by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), currently leads the nation in points, averaging 6.44 per set. Her 5.47 kills per set are not just a MEAC best, but they’re also the second-highest average in Division I.
She is also 15th in the nation in aces with a conference-best 0.53 per set.
Junior middle blocker Marija Kocevska, who is fifth in the MEAC in aces (0.42), ranks 59th in the nation in that category. Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca is 84th in the nation in assists, averaging a MEAC-best 10.19 per set.
The Lady Pirates (5-7) also rank in the top 100 nationally in two statistical categories - 43rd in aces (1.57) (third in the MEAC), and kills (13.40) are a conference best and 81st in Division I.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action Tuesday night, when they open their home slate against William & Mary in Holland Hall at 7 p.m. Conference play starts this weekend, as Hampton heads to Norfolk State on Friday, before returning home to take on Morgan State on Sunday.
