Eagles End Road Swing with Loss to Cal State Northridge

SEATTLE -- Cindy Okpegbue had 10 kills to lead Coppin State, but the Eagles dropped a 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 decision to Cal State Northridge on the final day of their West coast trip on Friday at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Okpegube was the only Coppin State player to reach double figures in kills on Friday. She also had a service ace and a block.

Kendra Ireigbe had five kills and four blocks, while Ellena Torres, Kandace Thomas and Denali Sturgeon each had two kills.

Gabrielle Otero led CSU with 11 digs, while Nicole Malave added eight digs. Torres led the Eagles with 18 assists.

Panthers Down Aggies In HPU Classic

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- North Carolina A&T fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-14) at the hands of High Point in the opening match of the High Point University Classic at the Millis Center.

Jillian Nobles led the Aggies with seven kills. This is the second time this season that the freshman has led the Aggies in kills. Liz Martino tallied 18 of the Aggies 22 assists. Ashley Johnson also finished with 10 digs.

Penn Overcomes 2-0 Hole to Down NSU, 3-2

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Down 2-0, Penn found its offensive touch and overcame that early deficit to defeat Norfolk State, 3-2, at the Villanova Classic.


The Quakers hit a combined .435 in the last three sets and .299 overall, winning those last three stanzas, 25-16, 25-18, and 15-10. NSU won the first two, 25-23 and 26-24, at Villanova's Jake Nevin Field House before Penn struck back.

Jessica Johnson led NSU with 14 kills and also added 10 digs. Goda Jankauskaite and Angie Darcus each had 12 kills for an offense that hit a respectable .191.

Coralie Jarema had nine kills, and no errors, while hitting .409. Sophomore Janay Frazier reached double-digit kills with 11, while sophomore Darcy Moore  added 49 assists and nine digs.

Savannah State opens Highlander Classic with loss

RADFORD, Va. – In the opening day of the 2013 Radford University Highlander Classic, Savannah State fell to host school Radford in three sets, 25-12, 25-14 and 26-24.

The Lady Tigers were led on the floor by sophomore Bianca Brochu, who recorded five kills in the match. Senior Bridgette Stephens led the team on defense with nine digs.

A balanced attack from the Highlanders resulted in four stat leaders, as Savannah Cantrell, Jordan Watson, Jesse Miedema, and Savanna Burton all had seven kills. Rachel Flores led in digs with seven.

SSU falls to 0-13 on the season as Radford improves to 9-4.

South Carolina State falls to UNC Charlotte at 49er Invitational

 CHARLOTTE -- The South Carolina State women's volleyball team fell to host UNC-Charlotte,3-0,  (25-15, 25-13, 25-17), on the first day of the 49er Invitational. 


Senior Desire Waller was the only SC State player to record double-digits kills with a game-high 10. Freshman Victoria Ferguson picked up 10 digs while sophomore Melanie Williams put up 18 set assists for the Lady Bulldogs who dropped to 0-10 on the season.

UNC-Charlotte was paced by Amanda Videmsek who also had a game-high 10 kills. Michelle Hovey picked up a game-high 15 digs and Britney Leigh Held had a game-high 27 set assists for the 49ers as they improved to 8-4.

Temple too much for Hornets in tourney opener

PHILADELPHIA --- Delaware State was overmatched by a strong Temple squad 3-0 in the opening round of the TU Tournament at McGonigle Hall. The scores were 25-11, 25-16 and 25-21. The Owls won for the eighth time in nine matches to improve to 8-2 this season. The Hornets fell to 1-7.

Caroline Gratton was Temple’s top performer with 10 kills and 13 digs. Gabriella Matautia added 11 kills, while Sandra Sydlik had a team-high 25 assists for the Owls.

Jessica Croucher led Delaware State with seven kills, while Jasmine Jackson added six. Sonya Inderbitzen had 12 digs to lead the Hornets, while Natalia Mendieta had a team-high 16 assists.

Hampton splits Day 1 of NMSU/UTEP Tourney

EL PASO, Texas & LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Hampton University split its two matches on Friday as part of the New Mexico State/Texas-El Paso Tournament, beating South Dakota State at Memorial Gym before falling to New Mexico State in the Pan American Center.

The Lady Pirates (5-6) beat SDSU 3-0 (25-19, 31-29, 25-20), before NMSU defeated Hampton 3-1 (28-26, 25-11, 24-26, 25-22).

Junior right side Vendula Strakova led the Lady Pirates with 27 kills, tallying a .488 hitting percentage thanks to just five errors in 43 total attacks. Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura added 10 kills, while also tying for the team lead in digs on defense with nine.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca and senior libero Sheileen Pagan also had nine digs each.

Fonseca also had a team-high 44 assists.
