Delaware State suffers five-set loss to Towson

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State volleyball team was a game away from victory, but ran out of gas in the last two sets of a 3-2 loss to Towson in the Hornets’ 2013 home opener on Tuesday night.


The Tigers won the deciding game five, 15-8, to improve to 5-8 this season. DSU fell to 1-5.

After dropping the first set 25-13, the Hornets took the next two games, 25-22 and 25-17, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.Towson staved off defeat with a 25-14 win in game four to force the deciding set.

Delaware State’s Jasmine Jackson led all players with 20 kills, while Jessica Croucher had 16 kills and a team-high eight digs for the Hornets. Jackson has led the team in kills in each of the last four matches.
Natalia Mendieta was tops on the Hornets with 23 assists, while Taylor Marshall had a career-high 20 helpers in the contest.


Saitaua Iosia recorded a double-double for Towson, collecting a team-high 18 kills and topping all players with 10 digs. Victoria Williams added 12 kills, while Casey Giovanazzi had a team-high 23 assists for the Tigers.

North Carolina A&T comes up short against Charlotte

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T fell to Charlotte, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-18) a non-conference match at Moore Gymnasium.

Brooke Stamnes led the Aggies (1-10) with 10 kills.

Stamnes recorded her fourth game of the season in double-figure kills. She also added seven digs. Aleena MCDaniel finishe with nine kills and tossed in six digs. Liz Martino  finished with 20 assists and Ashley Johnson  tallied 15 digs.

Eagles fall at home to East Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central could not overpower the East Carolina Pirates during their second match-up of the season, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18) on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.


The Eagles relied on the offensive efforts of junior Da’Sha Brown and senior Kalin Russell, who finished the contest with 10 and seven kills respectively. Contributing to the offensive effort was the setting duo of Alice Genna and Melissa Rabell Pineiro who collected 28 of the teams 29 assists, with 19 and nine apiece.

Pierre registers 11 kills in Bethune-Cookman loss to Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – Delicia Pierra posted 11 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two services aces in Bethune-Cookman’s 3-0 (25-15,25-17,25-19) loss to Stetson.

Destiny Hudson added six kills for the Wildcats (1-9) while Rhea Simon and Aria Cormier added four each. Freshman setter Alexas Thomas had 26 assists, while freshman libero Normarie Rolon finished with nine digs.

Norfolk State drops match to William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by Dessi Koleva's 14 kills and 12 digs, William & Mary defeated the Norfolk State, 3-0, in a non-conference matchup.


A year after NSU won its first-ever match in the all-time series, the Tribe rebounded to defeat the Spartans, 25-21, 25-18, 25-16 at Kaplan Arena.

Liz Brown added 10 kills for the Tribe (4-7), who pulled away from the Spartans midway through each of the three sets.

Janay Frazier led NSU with eight kills while hitting .333. Senior Goda Jankauskaite added seven kills. Sophomore setter Darcy Moore led all players with 16 digs to go with 29 assists. Redshirt junior Noelle Eagles added 15, and Alex Irizarry contributed nine.
