Cross Country Recap: September 14

BURLINGTON, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior Amber Brooks led the Lady Eagles cross country team as they competed in the fifth annual Elon Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 14 in Burlington, N.C.
 
A native of Tampa, Fla., Brooks completed the 5k course with a time of 19:43, finishing 20th overall.
 
NCCU junior Regina Summerville finished with a time of 22:25, followed by senior Delesha Conquest (22:29), junior Syrita Hunt (23:03), and senior Sararesa Hudson (27:54).
 
As a team, the Lady Eagles finished fourth overall with a time of 1:55:35, behind UNC-Greensboro, Elon, and North Carolina A&T State.
 
The NCCU men’s squad was led again by freshmen runners Gregory Coward, Deandre James, and Victor Dunbar, completing the 8k course with the finishing times of 29:17, 29:42, and 34:00, respectively.
 
In addition, sophomore Kevin Vincent finished with the time of 34:54, along with sophomore Brett Boykin-Roach (35:11) and freshman Carlton Edwards (35:13).
 
The Eagles also earned a team fourth place finish with a combined time of 2:43:07, behind Elon, UNC-Greensboro, and North Carolina A&T State.

Oliver top DSU finisher at Hornet Invitational


SMYRNA, Del. --- Delaware State University’s Terrell Oliver was the first Hornet male to finish the race at the DSU Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

Oliver was sixth among 33 Division I men to complete the four-mile course with a time of 21-minutes-41.68 seconds. Christian Smooth of Morgan State was the overall winner at 20:22.99.

UMES won the men’s team standings with 35 total points. Morgan State was a close second with 39 points; followed by Delaware State at 61.

Marc Garduno and Brandon Barnes were the next Delaware State runners to cross the line, finishing 11th and 12th, respectively. Garduno posted a time of 22:24.10, while Barnes was clocked at 22:32.48.
In the women’s race, Delaware State was also third with 75 total points.

Anaya Reid was the first Hornet woman to complete the 5K course with a time of 21:08.63, 13th among 45 Division I runners.

Brianna Sims (21:31.03) and Ashley Robinson (21:32.45) also finished in the top 15 for Delaware State.

Morgan State was the women’s team winner with 15 total points. UMES was second with 61 points.

MSU Captures Hornet Invitational; Seymour and Smooth capture individual titles

 

SMYRNA, Del. -- Morgan State’s Ashley Seymour extended her winning streak to two straight, as she led the Lady Bears to a first-place finish at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Delaware State.

Seymour ran a winning time of 17:53.27 to lead Morgan State, which had runners capture the first five spots and seven of the top 10. Ishakeema Swain finished second with a time of 18:10.65 and Kali Kendall placed third in a time of 18:55.73. Nynneya Columbus (19:04.40) and Jada Boyd (19:30.10) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Lady Bears would finish with 15 points and an average time of 18:42.83, while Division 3 Wesley also had 15 points, but an average time of 22:29.57. Maryland Eastern Shore finished second with 61 points, followed by host Delaware State (75 points) and Coppin State (95 points).

Christian Smooth ran a time of 20:22.99 during the Delaware State Invitational 4k meet to help the Bears to a second-place team finish.

Smooth claimed the individual title in a time of 20:22.99, while Morgan State freshman Lenier Tucker finished in a time of 20:53.17 to place third.

It was Smooth's second individual title of the season.

UMES men take first, women finish second at DSU Invitational

DOVER, Del. - For the fourth time in the past five years, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's cross country team placed first at the Delaware State University Invitational as the team took three of the first four places to claim gold on Saturday afternoon.

The women's team ran well themselves as sophomore Rachel Halmon took eighth overall to guide the Lady Hawks to a second-place finish. The men's team won the four mile event by just one point, while the women held off a strong charge by Delaware State to solidify their position in the 5k.

It was Khalil Rmidi Kinini once again leading the way for the men's team after he placed third overall with a commanding time of 20:55.99. The freshman was followed by two fellow classmen as Derrick Cheruiyot and Nassar Whitehead placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Cheruiyot ended the race in 21:29.00, while Whitehead finished a second later in 21:30.04.

Senior Codjo Gbedo was the fourth Hawk to place in the top-10 as he concluded his four mile run in 22:21.63 for 10th place. Senior Alonzo Jarmon capped the scoring for the men in 16th place with a time of 22:56.67. UMES also had four other runners compete in the event and three of the four finished within the top-30.

Halmon was the pace setter for the women for the second consecutive race with an eighth-place time of 19:58.12. Sophomore Shantol Hemley made it two top-10 finishes for the Lady Hawks with a 10th place finish in 20:59.87. Freshman Jheniel Kelly and sophomore Margaret Wilmot-Francis claimed 11th and 12th, respectively. Kelly ended in 21:00.59 and Wilmot-Francis finished the race in 21:03.46. Sophomore Annis Mars took 20th in 23:22.92.
