CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern used a balanced attack to down the Savannah State volleyball team in three sets at the Buc Dome onTuesday evening.
CSU jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead behind seven service points from Siraya Windsor. Out of an SSU timeout, CSU's Kalyla Klinger recorded two quick kills. SSU senior Bryana Gadis responded with a kill to cut the home teams lead to 11-3.
A 5-0 run from the home team gave them a 15-4 lead midway through the first set. Later, Gadis recorded a service ace to cut the Lady Bucs lead to 20-10.
Out a second timeout, each team closed out the set with three points each. CSU took a 1-0 lead with a 25-12 game win.
In the second set, CSU took a 9-2 lead behind several kills. A kill from Gadis and a CSU error cut the home teams lead to 9-4.
Later a service ace from SSU sophomore Justice Dilworth and a kill from sophomore Bianca Brochu cut the Lady Bucs' lead to 15-9.
A 6-2 run from CSU put the Lady Bucs up 21-11 towards the end of the second game, prompting an SSU timeout.
The Lady Tigers continued to battle in the final moments with kills from freshman Caitlynn Masoe and Dilworth, but the Lady Bucs offense proved to be too much, as SSU fell 13-25.
Into the third set, the Lady Bucs again jumped out to a big lead early, 10-4, behind several costly SSU errors.
Out of a pause, the Lady Bucs racked up seven more points for a 17-8 advantage behind three kills and several Lady Tiger errors.
Down the stretch of the final set, CSU sealed up the match win with an 8-3 run, capped by a kill from Klinger.
SSU falls to 0-8 on the season after dropping Tuesday's match. The Lady Bucs improve to 2-6 on the season.
Gadis led the Lady Tigers with six kills and five digs. Senior Asiha Williams led the team in digs with eight. Freshman Alexis Washington recorded seven digs as well.
Klinger led the Lady Bucs with 10 kills, while Meredith Parrott and Windsor each added eight. Katrina Houston added seven kills in the team effort. Windsor led in digs for CSU with 10.
Lady Rattlers rallies past UNF for 3-2 win
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Volleyball team picked up their second win of the season as the Lady Rattlers defeated the University of North Florida, 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11) in five sets, here Tuesday night at the Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium.
FAMU (2-4) was paced by Katherine Huanec as she finished the contest with a team high 13 kills, followed by Yeisha Arcia with 12 and Ginna Lopez-Chavez with11. Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattles in assists with 42; while Joanie Del Castillo recorded a team high 25 digs.
In the first set, UNF jumped out to a 10-5 lead capped off by a FAMU service error. The Lady Rattlers would then battle their way back into the match as FAMU tied the set at 14-14 on UNF attack error, capping a 9-4 run by the Lady Rattlers.
FAMU would reel off four more points to take an 18-16 on a double block by both Dei’Ja Martin and Gonzales.
UNF would then use a 6-3 run to tie the first set at 23-23 on Budinska kill. A Kelly Koop kill followed by a FAMU attack error would give UNF, the 25-23 win in the first set, giving the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.
The second set would be FAMU as the Lady Rattlers used a 9-5 run to tie the set at 19-19, capped off by a UNF attack error.
UNF would tie the set at 23-23 on a Budinska kill. FAMU would then win the set on a Huanec kill, followed by an UNF attack error, giving the Lady Rattlers a 25-23 win, tying the match at one apiece.
The Ospreys would take a 2-1 lead as defeated the Lady Rattlers, 25-20 in the third set.
FAMU would win the fourth set to tie the mat at 2-2 as they used a 10-5 run to win the set 25-15.
In the fifth and deciding set, FAMU jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the eight-point break, allowing both teams to change sides. The Lady Rattlers would then extend their lead to 11-4, capped off by a Soriano kill.
The Ospreys would then reel off six straight points as they cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 14-11, as UNF recorded three kills and three service aces in their 6-3 run.
Huanec would win the set and match for the Lady Rattlers as she recorded the final kill of the game to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
UNF (3-4) was paced by Anna Budinska with a team high 17 kills, followed by a Carina Hoff with 10. Abby Fesl led the Ospreys with 47 assists, while Cari Whitemire finished with a match high 12 digs.
