Hampton?s McCoy, Jackson Named VaSID Second Team All-State

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Hampton University's Taylor McCoy and Jailynn Jackson each earned Second Team All-State honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), as the All-State teams were announced on Friday.

McCoy was named the MEAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, capping off a freshman season in which she led the Lady Pirates in batting average (.389), hits (72), doubles (18), RBIs (43), and total bases (111). She also led the team in slugging percentage (.600), on-base percentage (.457), and fielding percentage (.982).

McCoy, a three-time MEAC Rookie of the Week and MEAC Player of the Week back on Feb. 27, was second in the MEAC in hits and total bases, while ranking third in the conference in batting average and fourth in RBIs. She had a 12-game hitting streak from March 12-29.

In the MEAC Tournament, McCoy was 7-for-14 (.500) at the plate with five RBis and three runs scored.

Jackson was named the MEAC Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference in wins, ERA, and strikeouts this past season. Jackson, who was also named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team, set a school record with 255 strikeouts this past season, leading the Lady Pirates to their first MEAC title since 1996.

She won 26 games in 2013 and had a 2.64 ERA, and she also set single-season school records in innings pitched (252.0), appearances (47), and starts (39). Jackson is also tied for second in school history in most wins in a single season.

Jackson was also a First Team All-MEAC selection and a National FastPitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Second Team All-Region selection.

Brooke Short of Longwood was named VaSID Player of the Year, while James Madison’s Jailyn Ford was named both VaSID Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Mickey Dean of James Madison was named VaSID Coach of the Year.
