BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan State women’s tennis player Ekaterina Iakovleva was ranked 18th in the final 2012-13 Division I Atlantic Region Top 20 rankings, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Iakovleva’s ranking marks the first time in school history a Morgan State tennis player has earned a regional ranking.
Iakovleva, who this past season was a first-team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) selection, led the Lady Bears to their best season in recent years, helping the team secure their first MEAC North Division title and a spot in the MEAC title match. Morgan State would eventually fall by one point to South Carolina State, which captured its ninth straight championship.
Iakovleva would finish with a 21-2 record at No. 1 singles, including a 20-match winning streak to conclude the season, after defeating the MEAC Player of the Year, South Carolina State’s Maria Cracium, 6-4, 6-4 in the title match. Iakovleva would receive All-MEAC Championship team honors at No. 1 singles, as well as No. 2 doubles with teammate Margarita Belyakova.
