MEAC ANNOUNCES SOFTBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NORFOLK, Va., – Coppin State junior Heather Josker earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in softball, the conference announced on Friday.  CSU’s Alyssa Barker was named Pitcher of the Week while Delaware State’s Jessica Madrid earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Josker (OF, 5-1, Jr., San Jacinto, Calif.) batted .600 (6-of-10) with one home run, one double and two RBI in three victories against Morgan State last week.  In game one of the double-header, Josker was perfect at the plate (2-for-2) with two hits, one home run and two RBI along with one putout. 

Barker (P, 5-3, Fr., Elyria, Ohio) posted a 2-0 record and a 0.95 ERA in three games against Morgan State.  She picked up both victories in the doubleheader sweep on Saturday.  She started game one and allowed no earned runs in a 9-1 victory.  She also pitched the final four innings of game two and allowed just two hits and no runs in a 6-0 victory.  Barker struck out seven batters in 14.2 innings pitched.

Madrid (OF, 5-4, Fr., Santa Ana, Calif.) batted .583 with two home runs, two doubles, six runs and seven RBI to aid the Lady Hornets to a 2-2 mark last week.  Against Maryland Eastern Shore, Madrid hit 1.000 (3-for-3) from the plate with two home runs and four RBI.

Other Top Performances

London Booker (NCCU) picked up the win and recorded a .000 ERA with three strikeouts and one walk in a 10-2 victory against North Carolina A&T.

Kathy Cortez (NSU) was 5-for-8 with a .625 average and five hits in three games for the Spartans.

Ashira Dobison (NCAT) pitched 16 innings with an ERA of 1.33, striking out four and posting a 1-1 mark last week.

Jenifer Lindsey (FAMU) picked up two wins over Bethune-Cookman with a 2.20 ERA while recording five strikeouts and allowing only two walks.

Sophia Ortega (B-CU) aided the Lady Wildcats with a 12-3 victory over Florida A&M as she batted .500 from the plate with one hit and two RBI. 

Jamie Schulle (NSU) went 1-2 last week with a 1.71 ERA in 16.1 innings in the circle while striking out nine of 75 batters.

De’Onna Smith (NCCU) recorded her first career home run by hitting a grand slam in a 10-2 win over North Carolina A&T.

Michelle Banuelos-Smith (B-CU) batted .667 with one home run and three RBI in a 12-3 win over Florida A&M.
